MODALS Modals are those helping verbs, which express the ‘mode’ or ‘manner’ of the actions indicated by the main verbs. They express modes such as ability, possibility, probability, permission, obligation, and others. The most commonly used modals are shall, should, will, would, can, could, may, might, must, ought to, used to, need.

MODALS OF PERMISSION Permission – is an act of giving consent or authorization. In stating permission, modal to be used include can, could, be able and may.

MODALS OF PERMISSION Can – to ask for and give permission. Example: Can I stay here? You can use by recycle bag. Can we have some sugguestions where to go for the Holiday?

MODALS OF PERMISSION Could- also used to ask for permission ( but not to give it). It is more formal and polite than can. Example: Could you join our group online? Could we interrupt? Could you kindly submit my order?

MODALS OF PERMISSION May- the most formal way to ask for and give permission. Example: May I have all the requirements for the enrollment? Parents may check the status of their children.

MODALS OF PERMISSION Be able to – use in formal sentences and with the perfect tenses and other modal verbs. Perfect tenses- to have + past participle form of a verb Example: have worked; has practiced; hasn’t called E xample : She will be able to buy a cellphone soon . The President is able to veto laws if he chooses to do so. I have never been able to understand Math subject!
