EFFECTS OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION ON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE by: NUEVA, AIHRYLL JOHN A. PACULANANG, MARK N. GUINAMOAY, RILYN CABILIN, MAE FLOR EPIT, EMILY
The body requires adequate sleep in order to maintain proper physiological health, psychological health, and cognitive function. Sleep deprivation can result in greater procedural errors, which places the clients at risk. Insufficient sleep negatively affects the nervous system, resulting in poor brain function . This study determined the EFFECTS OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION ON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
This study will find out the effects of sleep deprivation on college students in their academic performance. Specifically, it aims to; To assess the effects of sleep loss. Sleep deprivation maybe more proactive than those students who are sleeping in time. Measuring the capabilities of sleep deprived students and non-deprived students in academics. Is sleep deprived actually beneficial?
Output Hypothesis Ho1. Lack of sleep could not intervene our mental and physical capacity as a student. Sleep deprivation is most common among Senior High school students which is why we want to know what would be the case in Philippine Advent College Academy. Students who are sleep deprived are most likely to have low grades in their subjects. Ho2. Sleep deprivation has a great impact in relation to the academic performance of all the Senior High school students. Students that are in Senior High school have experienced sleep deprivation once in their studies.
Wake-State Instability Theory by Doran, S.M., Dongen and Dinges, (2001) O ccurs when sleep-initiating mechanisms repeatedly interfere with wakefulness, depending on the severity of sleep deprivation, making cognitive performance increasingly variable and dependent on compensatory mechanisms. The state instability hypothesis posits that increasing sleep drive brings about escalating state instability in attention, making neurobehavioral performance increasingly variable. This hypothesis predicts that performance variability is a function of prior wake, circadian phase, and time on task. The connectivity of this theory in our study is in well fact involves in sleep deprivation and how it occurs during we go to bed at night. This justifies that the study is well connected to wakefulness and the inability of students to sleep accordingly to what our body needs.

Lopez (2022-2023) The letter of permission was processed for approval by the researchers to the college president Secure a permission to conduct the study from the Principal of the Senior High School Department Seek permission from the Class Adviser of Grade 11 – 12 in strands of STEM, HUMMS, ABM & TVL METHODOLOGY
Statement of the Problem This study aims to verify the effects of sleep deprivation amongst college student in Philippine Advent College Institution. What is the amount of sleep of senior high school student on a regular basis? What is the impact of the amount of sleep on their studies? Does lack of sleep affects students on their daily tasks in home and in school?
Statement of the Problem 4. Does sleep deprivation affects senior high school students greatly in their physical and mental health? 5. Is there a significant difference between the amount of sleep of the students and their daily task? 6. Is there a significant relationship between the amount of sleep of the students and their academic performance?
Based on the data gathered the following items are considered the findings of the study: 1. Majority of the respondents are 16-19 years old ranging from grade 11 and grade 12. With HUMMS 11 the only strand that covers the required amount of sleeping time which is 7-8 hours. But most of the strands are sleep deprived having 5-6 hours’ sleep on a regular basis. 2. Having less than 7-8 hours of sleep makes the student unable to focus more on their studies. With this in mind, the respondents tend to be more forgetful and it had huge impact in participating to classes. It is very clear that the students feel more tired resulting the disruption of their students. 3. Due to the excessive use of technology before going to sleep. The respondents experienced sleep deprivation or low quality of sleep which leads to them not be able to do their daily tasks well
4. For most of our respondents are sleep deprived they experienced which makes them fatigued physically and the feeling of exhaustion that causes them to lay more than to move proactively. Hence, the respondents also dealt with mental problems as said by the World Health Organization, Insufficient sleep can impact your brain's functioning including your ability to remember, regulate emotion and attention, the speed you process information and the ability to have insight. Even short-term sleep deprivation can impair these functions. It can also affect your mentality making you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.
5. There are no significant differences amongst the amount of sleep of the students and their daily tasks. 6. Sleep is an essential aspect of our lives. It affects our physical and mental health, and as students, has a significant impact on our academic performance. A quality sleep is crucial to our cognitive abilities, including memory, focus, and attention, all of which are necessary for successful academic careers. It has great significance; adequate sleep is needed to improve academic performance.
Conclusions: On the basis of the findings, the following conclusions are drawn: STEM, ABM, TVL, and HUMMS from grade 11 – grade 12 are owning a range of 5-6 hours of sleep with only HUMMS 11 having the regular amount of sleep with the required 7-8 hours of sleep which leads them to be sleep deprived. As a result of being sleep deprived their mental capabilities are directly affected which causes them to feel more annoyed, easily provoked, and irritated They often experienced poor memory due to lack of sleep. One of the reasons why students often sleep late at night is by the use of technology.
This is caused by excessive use of gadgets and appliances such as; television, computers, and mobile phones. Furthermore, this affected the level of focus of the students in their every doing, making them less proactive. Hence sleep deprivation may have a big impact on academic performance, but it has a significant impact on the student's general health as well. Furthermore, if a teen has health issues, he or she will be unable to function effectively in school as a result.
Recommendations: Based on the findings and conclusion of the study, here are several recommendations to be considered: 1. Conduct a study about the factors that would affect the students sleeping routine for further analysis. 2. Conduct research that links sleep deprivation towards the different subjects that senior high school may have, whether it is written, quarterly assessment, and performance.
3. Conduct a study of the aftereffects of sleep deprivation of the mental health of the students and its components. 4. Other researchers may replicate this study using other factors at a wider scope.
