CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND In these day, reading comprehension is an important part of language learning. Reading is not simply the process of matching written symbols to one's spoken language; it is also the process of making sense of words, sentences, and connected text, which is known as comprehension. Reading is a complex process which involves not only the read the text but also their experience to comprehend it. Because of its complexity, many teachers of English at junior and senior high school find difficulties in all teaching reading and prefer teaching structure to reading .
Does the use of humor stories improve the reading comprehension of 8th grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Poso Pesisir Utara? 1.2 Problem Statement 1.3 Research Objective The objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness the use of humor stories in teaching reading can improve students’ reading comprehension of 8th grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Poso Pesisir Utara.
1.4 Significance of The Research The result of the research is expected to contribute to be useful reference for the English language teaching particulary for teaching reading students’ for the English teacher for other and for the researcher herself.
1.5 Scope of the Research This study is limited to the use of humor stories as reading materials from textbooks in English classes. In terms of discipline, this research is included in interpretative comprehension. T his study provides a pretest and a posttest.

2.3 Hypothesis Ho: Humor stories cannot improve reading comprehension of 8th grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Poso Pesisir Utara. Ha: Humor stories can improve reading comprehension of 8th grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Poso Pesisir Utara.
Chapter III Research Method
3.1 Research Method This research uses an experimental design. The research will apply mixed method design namely c onvergent P arallel m ixed m ethods d esign .
3.2 Population and Sample Population Sample The population of this research is taken from the 8th Grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Poso Pesisir Utara in 2023/2024 academic year. The number of population was 48 students. The researcher choose VIII A students as the sample the number of total sample are 23 students.
