PRESENTED BY: MOHD AARIF NRO NO: 0391160 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRAINING PROGRAMME AUXILIARY STORAGE DEVICES ROLL NO.: 7

A CKNOWLEDGEMENT I am thankful to the ITT Center ( Gurugram ), ICAI to give me an oportunity to prepare this presentation. I will be inharmonious to express my gratitude to our faculty Mrs. Shilpa Sharma Madam . It was such a great experience for me & will definitely helpful in improving my skills. INTRODUCTION MEANING Auxiliary storage, also known as, secondary storage, secondary memory or external memory. USEFULNESS Auxiliary storage device are useful in transferring data or programs from one computer to another computer.

MAGNETIC TAPE HARD DISK FLOPPY DISK ZIP DISK JAZ DISK SUPER DISK OPTICAL DISK DVD USB FLASH DRIVE AUXILIARY STORAGE DEVICES

There are mainly two types of auxiliary storage device, based on the type of data type. Sequential access media Random or direct access media. TYPES OF STORAGE :-

The data stored in the media can only be read in sequence and to get to a particular point on the media, we have to go through all the preceding points. SEQUENTIAL ACCESS MEDIA :-

Magnetic tape is a magnetically coated strip of plastic on which data can be Encoded . Tapes for computer are similar to the tapes used to store music. MAGNETIC TAPE

TYPE CAPACITY Half Inch 60MB-400MB Quarter Inch Cartridges(QIC tapes) 40MB-5GB 8-mm Helical scan 1GB-5GB 4-mm DAT(Digital Audio Tape) 2GB-24GB TYPES OF TAPES

HELICAL-SCAN CARTRIDGE It’s a type of magnetic tape that uses the same technology as VCR tapes. The term helical scan usually refers to 8-mm tapes, although 4-mm tapes (called DAT tapes) Use the same technology.

DAT CARTRIDGE This is type of magnetic tape it can support Data transfer rates of2MBPS . Digital audio tape cartridge have the greatest capacity. They require expensive tape drives and slow data transfer rate.

The data stored in this media can access any point at random without passing through intervening points, so it is called as direct access media or random access media. DIRECT ACCESS MEDIA

HARD DISK Hard disk is a Magnetic disk on which we can store computer data . Hard disk hold more data and faster than floppy disks. A hard disk store anywhere from 10 MB to several GB.

HARD DISK

A single hard disk usually consists of several platters. Each platters requires two read/ write heads, for each side. Each platter has the same number of tracks . A track location that cuts across all platters is called a cylinder. HARD DISK

FLOPPY DISK Floppy disk is a soft magnetic disk . Floppy disk are slower to access , than hard disk . Floppy disk have less storage capacity than hard disk . Floppy disk are less expensive and are portable.

5.25 - INCH - The common size for PCs made before 1987. This type of floppy is generally capable of storing between 100 KB to1.2 MB data. Floppies come in two basic sizes :

3.5 INCH – Their small size , micro floppies have a larger storage device than their Cousins. Storage capacity of these floppy disk 400KB to 1.4MB of data.

Zip disk developed by Iomega corporation. These disk are slightly larger than floppy disk and twice as thick. Zip disk can hold 100mb of data. Zip disk become a popular media for backing up hard disk and transporting large files. ZIP DISK

ZIP DISK

Jaz disk drives developed by the Iomega corporation . Jaz drive has a 12-ms average seek time and transfer rate of 5.5 MBPS Jaz disk hold 1 GB storage capacity. JAZ DISK

The design of the Super Disk system came from an early 1990s project at Iomega. The super disk diskette can have 135 tracks that conventional 3.5 inch 1.44 MB diskette use. SUPER DISK

CD-ROM(Compact Disc Read-Only Memory) WORM (“Write-Once, Read–Many”) ERASABLE CD- R DRIVE (Compact Disk-Recordable Drive) CD- RW DISKS (Compact Disk ReWritable disk) DVDs (Digital Video Disk) OPTICAL DISK:

CD-ROM, which is pronounced as ‘see- dee-rom ’. CD-ROM is a type of optical disk. The storage capacity of CD-ROM up to 1 GB. The most common size is 630 MB. CD-ROM:

CD-R DRIVE is a type disk drive that can create CD-ROMs and audio CDs. CD-R DRIVE can also read CD-ROMs and play audio CDs. CD-R DRIVE

CD –RW DISK CD-RW Disk is short for CD– reWritable disk This is a new type of CD Disk That enables to write onto it in multiple sessions. The first cd-rw drive is became available in mid of 1997. We can only write to them once.

DVD is an optical storage device that looks like the same as a CD. But, It able to hold about 15 times as much information and transfer to the computer about 20 times fast as CD-ROMs Also called Super density Disk. It can hold 17GB of data.. DVDs

A  USB flash drive , also known under a variety of other names. (like pen drive). Is a data storage device  that includes flash memory with an integrated Universal Serial Bus  (USB) interface. USB flash drives are typically removable and rewritable. USB FLASH DRIVE
