INTRODUCTION Discovery Learning is a method tounderstand the concepts, meanings, and relationships, through intuitive process to finally come to aconclusion . Discovery Learning is a type of methodwhere learners construct their ownknowledge by experimenting with adomain , and inferring rules from the results of these experiments. Balım (2008:2) Discovery learning is a method thatencourages students to arrive at a conclusion based upon their own activitiesand observations .
“ Discovery Learning can be defined asthe learning that takes place when thestudent is not presented with subjectmatter in the final form, but rather isrequired to organize it him self ”. The Discovery Learning more emphasison the discovery of concepts or principlesthat were previously unknown. In applying the method of Discovery Learningteachers act as mentors to provide theopportunity for students to learn actively, as theopinion of the teacher should be able to guideand direct the learning activities of studentsbased on the objectives. Such conditions wouldlike to change the teaching and learningactivities are teacher-oriented to student-oriented. In Discovery Learning, should the teacher mustgive his chance to be a problem solver, ascientist , historian, or mathematicians.Teaching materials are not presented in its finalform , but students are required to undertakevarious activities to gather information, compare , categorize, analyze , integrate, reorganize the material and make conclusions.
The Steps of Operation 1. Preparation Steps 2. Implementation a) Stimulation (stimulation / arousaladministration ) b) Problem statement (statement / identificationproblem ) c) Data collection (Collection of Data) d) Data Processing (Data Processing) e) Verification (Proof) f) Generalization (draw conclusions /generalizations) 3. Assessment System
Advantages of Discovery Learning Help students to improve and enhance theskills and cognitive processes. Discovery effortsare key in this process, a person depending onhow learning. The knowledge obtained through this method isvery personal and powerful because strengthenunderstanding , retention and transfer. Cause of pleasure on students, because thegrowing sense of investigating andsuccessfully .
Advantages of Discovery Learning Centered on students and teachers alike activerole issuing ideas. Even teacher can act as astudent , and as a researcher in the discussionsituation . Help students eliminate skepticism (doubts)because it leads to certain truths and the finalor definitive. Students will understand the basic conceptsand ideas better. Encourage students to think and work on theirown initiative.
Advantages of Discovery Learning Encourage students to think and formulatehypotheses own intuition. The learning process includes aspects fellowstudents leading to the formation of the wholeman . Increasing the level of awards to students; The possibility of students learning by using avariety of learning resources. Can develop their talents and skills ofindividuals .
Weaknesses of Discovery Learning This method raises the assumption that there isa readiness of mind to learn. This method is not efficient to teach a lot ofstudents , because it takes a long time to helpthem find a theory or solving other problems. Expectations contained in this method can bedispersed dealing with students and teacherswho are familiar with the past ways of learning .
Weaknesses of Discovery Learning Teaching discovery is more suitable to developunderstanding , while developing aspects ofconcepts , skills and overall emotional receivedless attention. In some disciplines, such as science lackingfacilities to measure the ideas presented by thestudents . Does not provide opportunities to think that willbe discovered by the student because teacherhad chosen first.
CONCLUSION Student actively method explore, observe, and investigation of teacher guidance. Based on these opinions, the researchers conclude that discovery method is the method that encourages students to learning by discovering the concept of the new activities such as observing, classifying, explanation, and drawing conclusions. Properly implemented, discovery learning can be a powerful tool in cultivating a generation of learners who are not just knowledgeable but are also critical thinkers and problem solvers, ready to face the complexities of the real world.
