Abstraction :   RRL is an important component of research regardless of the type of research. Be it quantitative or qualitative research, you spend time and effort in reviewing related literature. Reviewing related literature is one major activity in research that makes you examine or study again concepts or ideas related to your research that people managed to publish in books, journals, or other reading materials in the past.

Referring to authors within the main body of the paper is called Citation or In-text Citation; at the end of the paper, it is called Bibliography or References. The two most commonly used referencing styles are the MLA (Modern Language Association) and the APA (American Psychological Association).

The following table shows you how these two referencing styles differ in some aspects.

Aspect APA System MLA System Writing the Author’s name Full surname first, then followed by initials of first and middle name Full surname first, followed by full first name, and optional initial of the middle name Writing the title of the reading material Italicized title with only the beginning word capitalized (exception: capital for every proper noun) Underlined or italicized title with all content words capitalized Writing the copyright date Written after the author’s name Written after the publisher’s name

Schwartz, J. (2005). Are organic vegetables really better for you? The Gazette, p. D6. Retrieved February 25, 2005, from Proquest database. APA System MLA System King, Joe. A Short History of the Entire World. NY:Dell Publishing, 1998. Examples:

Original passage   Paraphrased version   Piranhas rarely feed on large animals; they eat smaller fish and aquatic plants. When confronted with humans, piranhas’ first instinct is to flee, not attack. Their fear of humans makes sense. Far more piranhas are eaten by people than people are eaten by piranhas. If the fish are well-fed, they won’t bite humans. (Fox Channel, 2014).   Although most people consider piranhas to be quite dangerous, they are, for the most part, entirely harmless. Application :   Direction: Paraphrase the original text given to you. Cite the related literature according to ethical standard to avoid plagiarism.

Original passage   Paraphrased version   “The number of foreign and domestic tourists in the Netherlands rose above 42 million in 2017, an increase of 9% and the sharpest growth rate since 2006, the national statistics office CBS reported on Wednesday” (DutchNews.nl, 2018).
