THE EFFECT OF SOURCE OF
INFORMATION ON GRADE 11
HUMSS STUDENTS’
COMPREHENSION SKILLS AT
TABANGO NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL

2023

INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
According to Davidson (2021) people who prefer
to use books as a source tend not to forget
anything because they visualize ideas as they
read. The internet is believed to contain
information posted at any time by anyone. In
the current academic life, the use of the
internet is inescapable (Pardede, 2017) and it
has significantly impacted students' reading
and comprehension habits according to several
studies (Ackerman & Lauterman, 2012;
Abanomey, 2013; Huang, 2014; Taj Et. Al, 2017)
The present study was conducted to know the
two sources and in which of these are more
desirable to improve students comprehension
skills. When it comes to understanding the
specific impact of internet sources and
textbooks sources on student comprehension
skills.

RESEARCH
OBJECTIVES
Are there strategies that can be used
to ensure that students are using valid
and reliable information from internet
sources? 01
02
Is there a significant difference in
comprehension skills among students
who primarily use the Internet and those
who primarily use traditional textbooks
as sources of information?03
To what extent does access to
traditional textbooks sources
improve students comprehension
skills?

The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential
impact of utilizing the Internet and traditional textbooks
as information sources on students' comprehension
abilities. This study aims to determine if there is a
significant difference in the effect of the two sources on
students' comprehension skills.

The independent variables (internet and traditional
textbooks) in this study it can be seen as providing
students with the opportunity to observe different
sources of information and construct their own
understanding and knowledge. The dependent variable
in this study is the students’ comprehension skills, which
will be influenced by the independent variables. It is
contingent upon the source of information, be it through
the internet or traditional textbooks, as to whether the
students can readily comprehend and refine their
comprehension abilities.

SCOPE
OF
THE
STUDY
This study is delimited to Grade 11 HUMSS students
enrolled in the Second Semester of the 2023-2024
School Year at Tabango National High School. Each
respondent will receive a standardized questionnaire
to answer. In order to prevent subjective perceptions,
students were selected from varied sections.

REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE
LOCAL
STUDIES
Internet and Textbooks as sources of Information
According to De Guzman and Gonzaldez (2016) that the majority of
the participants used the internet and textbooks as their main
sources of information. It also revealed a positive correlation
between the frequency of using the internet and textbooks and
students' comprehension skills.
It showed that students who used both sources of information
frequently had higher comprehension skills compared to those
who only relied on one source De Guzman and Gonzales (2016.

REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE
GLOBAL
STUDIES
Comprehension Skills
According to Smith and Johnson (2018) The results showed a
strong positive correlation between internet usage and students'
comprehension skills. Students who used the internet as a source
of information had higher levels of comprehension compared to
those who did not use the internet. They also found that the type of
internet usage played a role in students' comprehension skills.
Specifically, students who used the internet for educational
purposes had significantly higher levels of comprehension
compared to those who used it for entertainment or social media
Smith and Johnson (2018).

METHODOLOGY
This chapter comprehensively outlines the
methodology employed for the research,
encompassing the various stages and
processes involved.

SAMPLING DESIGN
AND TECHNIQUE
The researchers employed the
method of Stratified Random
Sampling Technique
RESEARCH LOCALE
This study will be
undertaken at Tabango
National High School
RESEARCH
INSTRUMENT
The research employed a
standardized survey and 5
point Likert scale

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
Identification of relevant data
collection issues.
Selection of pertinent
issues and establishment
of objectives.
Formulation of an appropriate
approach and methodology
Formulation of research
questions for participants.
Creation of survey
questions for participants.
Primary data collection from
participants through
questionnaire responses.

STATISTICAL
TOOL
The researchers utilized Pearson r as a tool to
employ the finding to see if there is a linear
relationship between the two variables.
