University Requirements for BS Degree What does a USF degree entail? 120 total hours ( Do not go over 132 ) 36 hours: Foundations of Knowledge & Learning (FKL) and General Education Courses *Gordon Rule requirements 42 hours upper division courses (68 hours in NUR) 9 hours summer (Can be completed in NUR) *Foreign language*

Academic Cautions Faculty Expect a Lot More Work Out-of-Class 3-Credit Course Meets ~3 Hours per Week On Average ~2 Hours per Week Studying/Homework for Each Class Hour Less for Some but Much More for Many Others 30 or More Credits Brought In (Getting Far Ahead)
How Many Classes Should I Take? Summer: Register for 6-9 credits 6 credits in Six-Week Term Requires ~45 Hours per Week 9 credits in Six-Week Term is Equivalent to 21 credits in Fall or Spring. That’s 63 Hours per Week! Fall: Register for 14-16 Credits Still Requires ~45 Hours per Week
Dates to Remember Please make sure to check registrar’s calendar There are mandatory orientations for Upper Division, once accepted. Add/Drop week, Withdrawal deadline, and registration opening times are all very important
Academic Regulations Committee (ARC) Petitions For undergraduate students requesting that certain University policies be waived through the Academic Regulations petition process, this process can be used to: late add a course after the add/drop deadline (limited to 2nd week of classes) Fees apply – check with Registrar’s Office No adds after 2 nd week of class unless course(s) needed for Bachelor’s graduation withdraw from select courses after the withdrawal deadline Must have cause. Not being aware of withdrawal deadline is not cause. withdraw from all courses in a term have a course deleted from the academic record Typically due to medical issues; requires completion of ARC form from physician/medical provider override the withdrawal limit 5 total at USF: 3 up to 60 credits; 2 over 60 credits request reinstatement to the University following academic dismissal

Nursing Program Track The Nursing programs at USF involve two steps since they are limited access: Pre-Nursing : the major that prepares student for applying to a nursing program at USF Usually consists of first two years at the University Nursing : accepted program majors that lead to the conferring of a BSN degree from USF Usually occurs during last two years at the University
What are the Nursing Prerequisites? Pre-requisites for Nursing (completed with a grade ‘ C ’ or better for Pre-Nursing program): Chemistry or Biology or Physics (CHM, BSC, PHY) (3) Psychology (PSY 2012) or Sociology (SYG 2000) (3) Life Cycle (DEP 2004) (3) Statistics (Any STA course) (3) Microbiology (MCB 2000/L) (4) Human Nutrition (HUN 2201) (3) Human Anatomy & Physiology I (BSC 2085/L) (4) Human Anatomy & Physiology II (BSC 2086/L) (4) Used for first attempt pre-requisite GPA
Nursing Specific Prerequisite Courses The College of Nursing offers four of the required pre-requisite courses specifically for pre-nursing majors: -BSC 2085/L, Human Anatomy & Physiology I (lecture & lab) -BSC 2086/L, Human Anatomy & Physiology II (lecture & lab) -MCB 2000/L, Microbiology (lecture & lab) -HUN 2201, Human Nutrition These four courses can be available on-line or in class at USF (depending on semester). These courses are also held specifically for pre-nursing students until later in the registration period.
Applying to the College of Nursing https://hsccf.hsc.usf.edu/soar/ SOAR Application Student Online Application Request Application Timelines for Upper division (2018) Open January 5 th to March 2 nd at 5pm ENC 1101, ENC 1102, and MAC 1105/MGF 1106 must be completed by the application deadline 7 out of the 8 prerequisites must be completed by the application deadline; if accepted, the 1 outstanding pre-requisite must be completed with “B” or better by the start of the program
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at USF: Upper Division (current USF students) Student is unlicensed (i.e. not a RN) and seeking first Bachelors degree Limited-access program Pre-Nursing major prepares students to apply for this program RN obtained with passing NCLEX exam after graduation
Upper Division Program Acceptance based on Overall college GPA Completion of all required pre-requisites ( MUST be complete by application deadlines ) First attempts taken in certain courses Pre-Requisite GPA calculated from those courses *Interview with Faculty (*if selected) Minimum cumulative 3.2 GPA required to apply to the program. Applications accepted for Fall semesters only (no summer or spring admission). Program lasts 5 semesters (including summer) and contains 68 credits Upon completion of the nursing program, graduates are eligible for the nurse licensure examination (NCLEX).
Keeping on Track Only one pre-requisite can outstanding when filling out the application to the College of Nursing (Must be a “B” or better at end of semester) ENC 1101, ENC 1102 and MAC 1105/MGF 1106 must be completed by the application deadline All college/university grades are included in your cumulative grade point average (GPA) This includes courses completed during dual enrollment! All grades are important! Admission is very competitive and meeting the minimum requirements does NOT guarantee admission to the College of Nursing. Utilize USF Career Services to help prepare for the interview portion Meet with your advisor each semester! Especially during mandatory first year advising during your first full year at USF!
Nursing Reality Check About 20% of qualified applicants to USF’s College of Nursing are accepted into the nursing program each semester Can apply to multiple nursing schools The pre-nursing student with no pre-requisites left will have to change their major if not accepted. Students can reapply during later admission periods.
CARE Program C.A.R.E. (Creating Access to RN Education) Minimum final High School GPA of 3.8 Minimum SAT composite score of 1360 ( this does not include the writing portion ) or minimum ACT composite score of 29. Achieve a minimum USF GPA of 3.6 as of the semester applying for the Upper Division nursing program. Earn a ‘ B ’ or better in each nursing prerequisite. Qualified students must be a declared Pre-Nursing major while classified as a Freshman/FTIC at the University of South Florida. Students will be notified if invited into C.A.R.E.

Pre-Nursing LLC What is the Pre-Nursing Living Learning Community (LLC)? 56 pre-nursing students live, learn, and build a community together in Maple A (suite style) What you do in the Pre-Nursing LLC Program: Co-enroll in critical pre-nursing prerequisite course work Participate in special events, volunteering, and activities designed for experiences in Nursing Monthly in-hall academic advising, peer mentoring, weekly tutoring throughout the year, and more! Spots are limited, so apply through USF housing portal today!!! *Eligible participants are first-year pre-Nursing students and previous pNLLC members. Preference is given to students with a minimum composite SAT of 1250 and/or ACT of 26. There is a fee per semester for PNLLC of $225
