INTRODUCTION The root word of discipline is “disciple,” which comes from the Latin word discipulus meaning “student.” Most people believe a disciple is a “follower” (probably because of the religious context), but in reality it means student—as in, “one who studies.” The word “discipline” is from the Latin word disciplina, meaning “instruction and training.” It is derived from the root word discere—”to learn.”
CONT… So, Discipline is to study, learn, train, and apply a system of standards. Discipline is not rules, regulations, or punishment. It is not compliance, or enforcement. It is not rigid, boring, or always doing the same thing. Discipline is not obedience to someone else’s standards to avoid punishment. It is learning and applying intentional standards to achieve meaningful objectives.
DEFINITION Moulding or training of the mind and character to bring about desired behaviour is known as discipline. T raining that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character of an individual. Can be defined as a force that prompts individuals, organization's, nation etc., to observe rules and regulations stipulated which are deemed necessary for the effective and efficient running of the group, organization, or nation.
AIMS OF DISCIPLINE To obtain a willing acceptance of the rules, regulations and procedures of an organization so that organizational goals can be achieved. To impart an element of certainty despite several differences in informal behaviour patterns and other related changes in an organization To develop among the employees a spirit of tolerance and a desire to make adjustments

PRINCIPLES OF DISCIPLINE Disciplinary guide lines should be in harmony with the ultimate goals of education. It must be implemented through love & understanding not through fear. It should be primarily positive & constructive. It should ensure equal justice for all, respects for the rights & dignity of an individual, and humanitarian approach towards all. Disciplinary policies & P rocedures should be first preventive, then corrective but never retributive.
CONT… Discipline is something that the teacher helps students to attain, not something that the teacher maintains. As much as possible, disciplinary conversations should be held in private. As far as possible, do not let disciplinary measures interfere with other developmental opportunities. Never banish a student from the classroom, if possible; if you feel isolation is necessary, try to let it be within the classroom. Sending a student to the head of the institution should be the last resort for a teacher. It should be done when no other way is left. Avoid collective punishment.

TYPES OF DISCIPLINE Self controlled discipline : In self controlled discipline the employee brings her or his behaviour in to agreement with the organizations official behaviour code, i.e. the employee regulate their activities for the common good of the organization. As a result the human beings are induced to work for a peak performance under self controlled discipline. It is also called as positive discipline.
2. Enforced Discipline : It is a managerial action which enforces employee compliance with organization's rules and regulations. i.e. it is a common discipline imposed from the top. Here the manager exercises his authority to compel the employees to behave in a particular way. It is also as negative, corrective or punitive discipline.
ADVANTAGES OF DISCIPLINE It establishes a pattern for acceptable conduct and performance ; it provides a code of conduct for all the students and subordinates. It promotes individual growth, develops human efficiency and enhances the will power to perform higher. It creates an environment under which individual excellence gets a boost, group performance is improved and harmonious working evolves.
