01 CHAPTER 1 TH E PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING This chapter presents the BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY, STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM, SCOPE AND DELIMITATION, SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY AND DEFINITIONS OF TERMS

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY The Internet has become a basic need of the current generation. These days, most of the world’s population uses the Internet regularly. Also, more people are becoming addicted to social media with each passing day. Students are among the main people who prefer these channels to stay tuned to the latest updates and to establish connections with people. However, social media is also causing several negative impacts on students. Thus, it’s important to educate students about how to use social media for positive results (Bharwani, 2023). Technology is able to provide students with access to large amounts of online resources and information. This allows and encourages them to carry out their own research and therefore become more independent. Technology can also simplify learning by making complex concepts more digestible for different learning styles   it allows a shift from static learning materials to more dynamic interactive media content. Students often learn faster and engage more when they are not only passively listening to a teacher and reading textbooks but also participating in engaging academic activities (Paine, 2022).

Students in today’s digital world rely heavily on various social media sites. There are many advantages to using these platforms, such as being able to keep in touch with loved ones, learn new things and interact with people. These are things that students worry that their academic performance may suffer as a result of the popularity of social media (Murtaza, 2023). Social media has emerged as an innovative tool in modern education, impacting student’s academic achievement to a large extent. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, on the other hand, have evolved beyond their initial purpose as communication tools, becoming conduits for learning and collaboration Adelakun, (2023). This transition is fueled by students’ knowledge and comfort with these platforms, eroding the lines between formal education and informal digital connections. The fun element of social media sites always helps students to , be connected with peers and teachers to gain knowledge, Amin et al., (2016). On the social media, students engage in a variety of activities some of which maybe potentially addictive. In fact, according to research by Azizi, Soroush, and Khatony (2019), the mass appeal of social media on the internet could be a cause of addiction and lower the academic performance of university students.

A s of January 2020, over 4.54 billion people were active internet users, accounting for roughly 59 percent of the global population, with 3.8 billion active social media users (Adelakun et al., 2020), whereas in April 2023, there were 5.18 billion internet users worldwide accounting roughly 64.6 percent of the global population, with 4.8 billion, or 59.9 percent of the world's population, being social media users Petrosyan, (2023); Sharma & Behl, (2022). Students are very much engrossed to social media. Most of the students of Catanduanes National High School are using social media daily and wouldn't be without it. Students use it to stay in touch, to find new people who share their passions and interests, and even in this research, it is being used by the researcher. People are becoming more powerful through technology, because has the ability to unite and even perform for them.Social Networking Site including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. These have been found out to be causing misuse of the Internet which leads to difficulty completing homework, studying for tests, and getting enough sleep to be alert for class the next day. The study explores how social networking sites usage influences the academic performance of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students at Catanduanes National High School. Through surveys and interviews, the researchers aim to understand the correlation between SNS engagement and academic achievement, as well as the challenges students face in managing their online activities alongside their studies. The research seeks to provide information into the potential effects of social media on students' grades and academic success amidst digital distractions.

, Statement of the Problem This paper aims to find out the Perceived Effects of Social Networking Sites on Academic Performance of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Students. Specifically, the study aimed to answer the following problems 1. . What are the social networking sites used by the grade 12 HUMSS students? 2. What are perceived reasons of students’ addictiveness on social networking sites? 3. What are the perceived effects of SNS on Academic Performance of Grade 12 HUMSS Students?

Significance of the Study Identifying the perceived effects of social networking sites on academic performance and study habits of Grade 12 students at Catanduanes National High School holds practical importance for educational practitioners. This study provides insight into how address the prevalent issue of social networking sites addiction among students. Administration. That they may read and be aware of the changes of the students and even the effects of social networking sites on their students, so that they can educate their students about the limitations of using the social networking sites. This may help them in planning their own tactics in making their students avoid social networking addiction. Teachers. The result of this study will help the teachers of the school to understand the significant effects of SNS’s on their students. This understanding will enable them to assist student in becoming aware of the possible effects it may have on them.

, Students. The study will enable the students to become aware that, aside from the social benefits of social networking sites, excessive use of these sites can pose potential dangers to their health. Future Researchers. This study will provide relevant material for students and others researchers undertaking similar research will offer valuable insights in to the effects of SNS’s on student’s academic performance, thus equipping researchers with additional information for their studies.

Definition of Terminologies To better understand the content of this research, definitions have been provided for words and terminologies that are not commonly used in everyday language. Here are the meanings of the words: Academic Performance – refers to a student’s achievement in their academic studies, typically measured through grades, test scores, and other indicators of learning and understanding. Catanduanes National High School is the name of a specific high school, likely located in the province of Catanduanes in the Philippines. It’s a public educational institution providing secondary education to students. Effect – refers to the outcomes or consequences of social media usage on Grade 12 HUMSS student’s academic performance and study habits, measured through quantitative and qualitative methods.

Grade 12 – second level of senior high school, commonly referred to as Grade 12 in some education system. HUMSS – stands for Humanities and Social Sciences. It’s an academic strand or track in the Senior High School Curriculum that focuses on subjects related to social sciences, humanities, and arts. Social Networking Sites – social media refers to websites and applications that allow users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Examples include platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. Surveys – research method involving the collection of data from a sample of individuals through structured questionnaires or interviews. Surveys are used to gather information about attitudes, behaviors, preferences, or opinions.

2 CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This chapter presents relevant literature and studies that the researcher considered in strengthening the claim and important of the present study.

Related Literature The study by Inaku K. Egere, published in 2020, investigated the impact of social networking sites (SNSs) on the academic performance of male undergraduate students in South-South Nigeria. It explored how much time students spent on SNSs and how it affected their academic work. Using a survey design, the study involved 380 students selected through random sampling. The research found that SNSs are an integral part of students’ daily lives, with most spending 5-7 hours daily on platforms primarily for chatting, entertainment, and socializing. However, excessive time spent on SNSs was linked to negative academic performance. The study concluded that male students use SNSs mainly for non-academic purposes, which adversely affects their studies. It recommended introducing media literacy courses, moderating mobile device use during lectures, and strengthening counseling services. “I call it the dark side: Stigma, social capital, and social networks in a disadvantaged neighbourhood” by Julia Verdouw and Kathleen Flanagan (2019) investigates how stigma within socio-economically disadvantaged communities affects residents.

dd content of the text , (Singh & Dika, 2003), explores how rural high school students’ social networks and sources of support impact their educational and psychological outcomes. It examines the quality, frequency, and nature of these relationships to understand how aspects such as the size, diversity, and interaction frequency of social networks influence students’ educational aspirations and engagement. The findings indicate that both academic and emotional support from network members significantly, though moderately, affect students’ educational outcomes. Rural education has long been recognized as distinct, often resulting in lower educational aspirations, achievement, and attainment compared to nonrural students. According to AlSaad et al., (2018), studies found out that academic outcome of students who spent most of their time interacting using social media are positive because they were able to share and generate ideas and concepts related to their studies. They also use these sites for having fun as these social media sites are helpful in their academic work. A similar study revealed that online social media had improved the communication between the faculty member and students which facilitate the communication of the correct information and improve understanding and the development of the ideas and the courses. Based on the information collected, it is noticeable to say that the use of the social media during the lecture time is not recommended.

Since the last few decades technology has grown immensely and has brought major changes globally. Communication barriers have been reduced through technological advancement and new mediums are being introduced to connect global audiences. Social networking has become an international trend and has spread its reach to almost every corner of the world. With these advancements a major concern arises as in this age of huge technological development social networking sites are becoming more and more popular among students especially in Pakistan (Hasnain et al., 2015). It has also been advised to start participating time management from the early student life (Valle et al., 2016). Time management has also been defined as a form of self-management with a clear emphasis on time in understanding what activities to do; how to do them more efficiently; in what time it should be done and when is the correct time to the particular activity (Savino, 2016). It has also been association with low anxiety and greater academic achievement in students, (Jenaabadi, Nestiezaie & Jalalzaei, 2016).

01 Whereas performing goal directed activities with the purpose of using time efficiently defines time management as “behavior”. The time management behavior has three basic surfaces that are: time attitudes, long-range planning and short-range planning (Aeon & Aguinis, 2017). Time attitude is the positive or negative perspective towards the present, future and past time which had been directly linked to academic achievement, especially in scientific subjects (Nieuwoudt, & Brickhill, 2017). The concept of handling everyday jobs for longer period of time and keeping up with the objectives set for significant dates is called the competence in long range planning. Whereas, planning in the short run for the day to a day activity or planning for tasks within a day or week is short-range planning. For students to better manage their curriculum and achieve learning objectives, these time management behaviors or skills are argued to improve the positive academic outputs (Razali et al., 2018).

Students who spent too much time on social media may struggle with time management and become less productive in classroom. Students are easily distracted from their studies by constant alerts, endless scrolling feeds, and the appeal of viral material (Murtaza, 2023). This stress-provoking effect of social media has been also pinpointed by Weng & Menczer (2015), who contended that social media becomes a main source of stress because people often share all kinds of posts, comments, and stories ranging from politics and economics, to personal and social affairs.

Related Studies Bergquist et al., (2026), many students blaming the various social networking sites for their steady decline in grade point. Abousaber and Oueder, (2018); Park et al., (2009); Karimi et al., (2014); Iwamoto and Chun, (2020); Abdulqader & Almunsour (2020), 3 billion individuals worldwide are now communicating via social media and students use them for pleasure, to kill time, to meet up with old friends, and to establish new ones. Social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp and blogs are comparatively more open and used to communicate with teachers and students as this are no ambiguity and miscommunication from social media which eventually improves the academic performance and students use social media for academic purposes positively affected their academic performance. Therefore, positive and negative moods can easily be transferred among the population using social media networks Chukwuere & Chukwuere, (2017).

Synthesis of the State of Related Literature and Studies Barber et al. (2017); Murtaza, (2023); (Laundry, 2014), has negative effects in students such as higher depression in adolescent students, students become less productive in classroom. Whereas, Iwamoto and Chun, (2020); Karimi et al., (2014); Bharwani (2023), 3 billion individuals worldwide are now communicating via social media and students use them for pleasure, to kill time, to meet up with old friends, and to establish new ones and students prefer these channels to stay tuned to the latest updates and to establish connections with people.

Gaps The absence longitudinal of studies tracking the perceived effects of social networking sites on the academic performance of Grade 12 HUMSS students in Catanduanes National High School does represent a valid research gap. Longitudinal studies, which track participants over an extended period, provide valuable insights into the development and long-term effects of social media habits on academic outcomes. By addressing this gap, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of how social media use evolves over time and its sustained influence on student’s academic achievements. Additionally, filling this gap can contribute significantly to the body of knowledge in education and psychology, offering insights that can inform educational policies and practices.

C H A P T E R 3 ___________________________________ METHODOLOGY AND RESEARCH DESIGN This chapter deals with the method and procedures used by the researchers in this study to answer the specific problems investigated. The research design, the population, the instrument and the steps that were followed in carrying out the research are presented in the following pages 3

Research Design The research design is a phenomenological qualitative design. Data will be collected through survey questionnaires administered to Grade 12 HUMSS students at Catanduanes National High School. The participants will be selected using non-probability sampling techniques to easily collect data. Stratified random sampling divide the population into groups to summarize the effect of social networking sites usage and academic performance on students, while phenomenological will be conducted to analyze the point of view of the participants.

Population and Sampling The researchers choose the respondents based on the focus of our study, which is the 12-HUMSS students, totaling is 261. To explore the perceived effects of social networking sites to academic performance, stratified random sampling divided the population to better understand the significance of investigating how SNS influences the academic performance and study habits within their specific educational context. Therefore, 61 respondents from their schools allows for a more focused and relevant exploration of this topic, as they can provide firs hand information into their experiences with social media and its effects on their academic lives.

Scope and Delimitation The study will focus on “Perceived Effects of Social Networking Sites on Academic Performance of Grade 12 HUMSS Students at Catanduanes National High School.” as this strand has the largest number of students, totaling 261. Additionally, as Grade 12 HUMSS students conducting this research, the researchers are particularly interested in understanding how social networking sites aspect our academic performance. The researchers' interests stem from the diverse nature of our curriculum and the increasing prevalence of social media in our daily lives, which may have implications for the ability to effectively manage the academic responsibilities.

Instrumentation and Data Collection In this research, the researchers employ a questionnaire where students are asked to circle the letter of their answer that best corresponds to their situations. This method simplifies the information gathering process as students only need to select the answer that best corresponds to their situation. The instruments selected by the researchers aim to streamline the information collection process.

Data Gathering Procedure The researchers developed ideas, titles, questionnaires, and objectives to create a comprehensive research study. Conducting surveys or questionnaires among respondents was their method of gathering responses. The researchers decided to first approach the Principal’s Office to request permission to initiate this study. Before respondents answered, they were provided with a letter of consent based on the proposed study. The researchers conducted data collection during vacant hours. They ensured that on going classes would be distributed during the surveys process.
