History of the Handshake
Why do we shake hands?
❑shaking hands existed since ancient times (thousands of years)
❑origins unclear
❑gesture perhaps began as way to convey peaceful intentions
❑extended empty right hand to prove not holding weapons, with up-
and-down motion of handshake meant to loosen hidden weapons
❑may have been symbol of good faith when making oath or promise
(clasped hands symbolized sacred bond)
