First
conditional

What Are First Conditionals?
First conditionals help us talk about real possibilities in
the future
We use them to describe cause and effect
They show what will probably happen if something else
happens first
Example: If you study hard, you will pass the test

Structure of First
Conditionals with "If"
To make a sentence in the first conditional, we use,
If + present simple, future tense.
Example 1: If I pass this exam, I'll celebrate.
Example 2: If I pass this exam, I won't have to do it again.
(S+V1(+s/es/ies) will/won’t + V1.

"When" shows more certainty than "if"
Use "when" for things that definitely will happen
Examples:
When summer comes, we will go swimming
When the bell rings, we will go to lunch
When I grow up, I will become a doctor
Using "When" Instead of "If"

Let’s compare
If I win the game… (maybe I will, maybe I won't)
When I get home… (I know I will get home)
If it snows… (we're not sure)
When winter comes… (we know it will come)

If you study, you will pass the exam.
If she wins, We will celebrate soon.
When she finishes, we will go home.
When it stops raining, we will play outside.

The important thing to remember with
the first conditional is that we can
never use "will" near "if". "Will" can only
come in the other part of the sentence.
