SCOPE OF ICT IN EDUCATION

ICT has become an important educational technique/tool in the field of education today. ICT tools like computer, software, internet, I/O devices, projectors etc. are effectively used in the field of education. ICT is playing an important role to connect the world which was not possible earlier. In modern age it is important to increase the scope of ICT as it has made teaching learning process flexible in a very short period .

SCOPE According to Dictionary meaning, scope refers to the extent or range of view, outlook, application , operation and effectiveness . By the meaning, “scope of ICT in education” means comprehensiveness, variety of learning experiences to be provided in the educational process using ICT.

SCOPE OF ICT IN EDUCATION ICT has a huge scope in education sector. Some of the usage of ICT in education are: A person from village also can refer the latest information and research everyday. Television broadcast is one of the best communication media to educate students. The difficult experiments , advance surgery for medical students etc. can be viewed. LCD projectors can be used for effective training . The man power problem, the human mistakes can be avoided by on-line examination .   In online tutoring, the student logs into his or her tutor through the use of internet at home. The student asks the question and teacher replies it by writing on smart board or using PowerPoint presentation.

Scope of ICT in the Education Sector 1. Classroom learning –With the introduction of ICT in education, classroom learning has become more interactive and interesting . With the help of presentations, designing and with use of whiteboard lists tough topics can be taught and learned in easier way. 2 . Digital Publication – The notes and other important documents can be digitized and hence transmitted easily . Many e-books are available on websites developed by different publishers. Encyclopedias are also available online. Books can easily be converted to e-books which becomes more handy and easy to carry and use and share its contents.

3. Online Examination and Evaluation – Online examination and evaluation is available to all the learners using ICT. UGC-NET and other ICT based examinations are held and evaluated every year. With the help of various software's online tests can be done easily and the result, progress report and feedback can be received immediately . Use of ICT as Administration tool – The administration of any educational organization can be handled more efficiently with the help of various tools of ICT like CCTV, computers etc. Records can be maintained, updated and shared using ICT like Employees register, Library record, Progress reports, Students register, Placement cell , Alumni record, School campus record , Finance & accounts , Timetable etc.

5. Research – With the help of various search engines and several web sites , doing research has become easy. Moreover with the help of internet a person can have access to any library of the world and can talk to eminent scholars using e-mails, chatting, video conferencing etc. Information can also be collected and stored in computer for research. Further, for analysis and reporting, computer can also be used. With the facilities of Internet, Website, and INFLIBNET , the researchers as well as a learner wanting to inquire or find out something that is happening elsewhere can have access to a large amount of information sitting at home.

6. Mass education : There has been explosion of population and knowledge. There is, therefore, a need to educate the masses. The problem is multiplied further by having a large section of illiterate people . So, ICT has a tremendous application to educate a large section of people and to impart a large amount of knowledge in a limited span of time. In this regard, the mass media viz., TV, radio, and other modern technologies like computers and information technology (E-mail, internet, mobile, etc.) has a lot of scope. The illiterate masses can also be made literate with the help of innovative methods and practices of teaching and learning.

7. Availability of e-contents in Distance education : ICT has a great scope in distance education and open school programme . Today there is a great need for personnel training and education on regular basis for updating oneself in the field of work. In this regard, distance education programmes , a relatively less formal process of education, have acquired new status. Educational technology with its innovative practices can educate the learners who cannot come to the classroom setup for their education. In this regard programmed learning materials, modules and counseling are some innovations which can help distance learners.

8. Collection, storing and retrieval of information : There are digital cameras and mobiles which provide us the facility to take same photographs of events that take place in a fraction of second . There are also satellites that work for us day and night to provide us information about places which are not accessible to us. Information can be collected with the help of this new electronic technology both in audio and in video form . Such information can be stored with magnetic and electronic devices easily and can be retrieved within no time.

9. MOBILE LEARNING : mLearning makes education more accessible as it enables learners to pursue their studies according to their own schedule . The portability of mobile technology enables students to learn at all times and at all places . The technological capacities of mobile phones allow communication by voice and text and capture still and moving images. Recent ‘ smart phones’ allow users to view PDFs, spreadsheets and word-processed files . Mobile Phones in Education can be used to browse internet to access endless information, Read news articles and current events and books, Download and use education programs such as Google Maps and use as GPS

10. ICT enabled education : Students use ICT as reference tool. They use computers to browse the internet to look information, project information and literature survey. Teachers use ICT in research for preparing teaching material ,participate in online forums and online conference. Researchers use ICT tools to collect, process and analyze data. School administrators use ICT tool for administrative purpose to make sure that the entire operation runs smoothly. E.g. to get student details at the click of a button.

11. Gaming and simulation : If historical events which are either costly or hazardous which cannot be conducted, then ICT can rescue us by doing the same through simulation. Computer technology in this regard plays the main role. This can provide a lifelike picture of phenomena in three dimensions (3D). It can also show the operation of different parts of a phenomenon and the consequences. The other possibility is games. Children can learn, through play, many concepts that just cannot be taught in the formal set of the classroom.

12. MOOCS learning Program : (MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSES ) MOOCS provides subject based online course facility to learners. A learner can join any free online course available from any university throughout the world. This facility is also available for all Indian learners through swayam App launched by MHRD. 13 Online digital library : Online digital library is operated through a website and database available on internet. Learning material is provided through e-book, e-journal, e-newspaper by paid and free digital libraries. Many colleges and universities have developed their own online libraries for the learners.

The education sector is one major area that ICTs are playing remarkable role. These technologies and tools help in facilitating learning and exchange of educational materials . The online learning system is another web-based application that is revolutionalising the learning platform of education. This system compliments the traditional face-to face teaching and learning format. In the on-line system, students can access class notes, submit assignments and also join a discussion group with other learners.
