INTRODUCTION Flowers are associated with the mankind from the dawn of Civilization . It is said that man is born with flowers, lives with flowers and finally dies with flowers. Floriculture is a new emerging industry in India. it can be a key component of Indian economy. Floriculture industry is considered as a high income generating agribusiness in India. India belongs to Native of many flowers opens up Vistas for exploting the commercial growing for rare flowers.

FLORICULTURE Floriculture, or flower farming, is a branch of horticulture concerned with the cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for gardens and for floristry, comprising the floral industry. The development of new varieties by plant breeding is a major occupation of floriculturists. Floriculture is the aesthetic branch of horticulture which deals not only with cultivation of ornamentals, annuals, biennials, and perennials plants including potted ones but also their marketing. This also includes marketing for local, distant markets and export of cut flowers.

VARIETIES These mainly consist of cut flowers, pot plants, cut foliage, seeds bulbs, tubers, rooted cuttings and dried flowers or leaves. The important floricultural crops in the international cut flower trade are Rose, Carnation, Chrysanthemum, Gladiolus, Gypsophila, Liatris, Nerine, Orchids , Anthurium, Tulip, and Lilies. Floriculture crops like Gerberas, Carnation, etc. are grown in Protected cultivation. The open field crops are Chrysanthemum, Roses, Gaillardia, Lily Marigold , Aster, Tuberose, etc . APEDA

FLORICULTURE PRESENT STATUS The government of India has identified floriculture as a sunrise industry and accorded it 100% export-oriented status. Owing to the steady increase in demand for flowers, floriculture has become one of the important Commercial trades in Agriculture.  The Indian floriculture industry has been shifting from traditional flowers to cut flowers for export purposes . APEDA

AREA’S OF CULTIVATION Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and West Bengal have emerged as major floriculture centers. About 322 thousand hectares of the area were under Cultivation for floriculture in 2020-21. Production of flowers is estimated to be 2151.96 thousand tonnes of loose flowers and 828.09 thousand tonnes of cut flowers in 2020-21. APEDA

National Horticulture Database published by National Horticulture Board, during 2020-21 the area under floriculture production in India was 322 thousand hectares with the production of 2152 thousand tonnes of loose flowers and 828 thousand tonnes of cut flowers. Floriculture is now commercially cultivated in several states with highest area in states such as Kerala (16.5%), Tamil Nadu (13.3%), Karnataka (11.4%), Madhya Pradesh (11.1%) and Uttar Pradesh (7%) have gone ahead of other producing states like Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Mizoram, Gujarat, Orissa, Jharkhand, Haryana, Assam and Chhattisgarh.

INDIA’S FACTS AND FIGURES India’s total export of floriculture was Rs. 771.41 Crores/103.47 Millions USD in 2021-22. The major importing countries were U.S.A, Netherland, Germany, U.K, United Arab EMTs, Canada and Italy. There are more than 300 export-oriented units in India. More than 50% of the floriculture products are produced in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. With the technical collaborations from foreign companies, the Indian floriculture industry is poised to increase its share in world trade.

Global Trend in Marketing In Africa, Kenya, South Africa, etc. have been moving fast towards flower production. These African countries may beat Indian flora industry, because there are cheap labour , favourable agro climatic condition for naturally ventilated green houses and involvement of Indian entrepreneurs also. In last 20 years, Indian flora industry stepped into international market and the area under flower cultivation has been expanding continuously. International floriculture trade is US$ 17 billion, which is increasing 10-15 % annually and is expected to reach US$ 25 billion by 2025.

Constraints of Floriculture Industry Unavailability of quality planting material. Lack of specific information on area and production of different flowers which lead to handicap for planning and production of flowers. Lack of information on novel/ruling varieties continuously keep changing in International market. Lack of advanced production technology like planting geometry, seed rate, nutrition, irrigation, management, grading, etc. Lack of research especially in development of new verities, PHT, production practices. Lack of suitable market survey and related information.

Future Potential of Floriculture in India Varied Agro -climatic conditions of country helps to grow any kind of flowers in one or other part of country, year round. India is geographicaly well located between two major export markets viz, Europe (Holland) i.e Aalsmeer (near Amsterdam) and Wetland (near Rotterdam) East Asia (Japan). In India, heating of greenhouse in winter is not necessary unlike western countries. Similarly cooling in summer is also not necessary. Availability of skilled manpower. Constant research on hi-tech water and nutrition management in cut flowers in different research centres and SAUs.

Future Strategies for Blooming Flora Industry Evolving new high yielding varieties specially for protected cultivation. This will prevent heavy royalty from imported varieties. Cold-storage facility needs to be created at the air ports and railway stations . Direct cargo flights from production centers to auction or destination center s. Generation of single window system for farmers with respect to finance and consultancy . Awareness should be created for popularizing flower cultivation for its comparatively high return than other crops in domestic markets.

Model Floriculture Center Establishment of these centers is done in some of the states like Maharashtra, Karnataka with the financial assistance of Government of India during the eighth plan period with the objectives of to demonstrate advances in cut flower cultivation technology. Conservation of wide flower crop diversity, act as quality planting material source for area expansion and demonstration and serve as training cum demonstration centre for post-harvest management of cut flowers.

Flower Auction Center Keeping in view the unorganized flora sector, regulation of cut flower market is very important to stabilize this industry. Flower auction centres can play a vital role as it can serve a common platform for the grower and buyers. By collective efforts of Karnataka Agro Industries Corporation (KAIC) and South Indian Flower Growers’ Association (SIFA), first flower auction center was established in Bangalore. Flower auction centres have also been established at Noida, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, etc.

Agri Export Zone for Floriculture Agri export zone for Floriculture is an initialization by APEDA and have been established to boost the Flora Industry in Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Uttrakhand , Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Identification of new and potential export zones are yet to be carried out .

Conclusion… Floriculture is a new emerging industry a bout 322 thousand hectares of the area under Cultivation in floriculture . Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and West Bengal are major floriculture centers.Major constraints in Floriculture is lack of Research in field of Floriculture . We needs more Research in field of Floriculture for better developement . N ew high yielding varieties specially for protected cultivation, Cold-storage facility are also needed for better growth this Industry.
