Being an amazing leader doesn’t just happen. It takes a lot of work and effort for people to develop their leadership skills. Leadership is often discussed in-depth in seminars and books, and even in degree programs. There are entire degrees dedicated to helping students become better leaders. These programs are essential as they help future leaders learn specific skills they need to thrive in a business setting, as well as communication and management techniques that will help them work effectively in leading a team.
Good leaders know that effective leadership doesn’t come easily. They work to cultivate leadership behaviors that will help them be effective and inspiring to their team. Good leaders also need to have solid leadership principles that they live by. Leadership principles are the framework of actions that a leader will take to help them get their team to the common goal. And good leaders understand what their principles need to be, and put them into practice every day.
If you’re studying to become a leader, it’s important to learn about leadership principles and determine which ones you can focus on. While there are various styles of leadership and unique leadership theories, great leaders have similar principles that help them find success. These 11 principles of leadership are vital for management professionals to possess so they can achieve their business goals.
1. Admit your mistakes.
To err is human, but some leaders are uncomfortable with the idea that their team could see them make a mistake. It can be a challenge to admit when you are wrong, but it’s extremely valuable and actually important for teams to see their leaders make mistakes and admit to them. It gives them the idea that they can also make mistakes and learn from them. Seeing a boss admit to a mistake can help humanize them, and actually help employees relate to and respect them more. Good leaders are up to the challenge—they show that it’s important to own your mistakes, help fix them, learn from them, and move on. This helps them set a great example for their organization. Being unwilling to admit mistakes can lead to employees not trusting their leaders, worrying that they will get in trouble if they mess-up in any way, and a lack of responsibility that can cause huge issues for your team. Being able to admit mistakes is a valuable leadership principle.
2. Be a good listener.
Great leaders know that communication is a two-way street that starts with listening. If a leader isn’t a good listener, the result will be that their team is far less likely to listen to them in return. Great leaders know that listening is key to helping them gain trust and respect of their team. Being willing to not only listen, but really hear what your team is telling you, is key to being aware of problems and how to fix them. Teams will communicate problems, concerns, ideas, and things about themselves that can help leaders know better how to inspire, motivate, and work with them.

TWO KINDS OF LEADERSHIP
•AUTHORITARIAN-recognized by the
dogmaticuse of power.
•PERSUASIVE-takes into consideration
the human elementswith all its complexity
and with all its differentiation of the
physical, mental and moral capabilities and
limitations of the individual.
Effective Leadership is a balance
between the two kinds of leadership.
AUTHORITARIAN PERSUASIVE

Principles of Leadership
•Know yourself and seek

tactically proficient
•Seek responsibility and
take responsibility for
your actions
•Make sound and timely
decisions
•Set the example
•Know your men and look
out for their well-being

informed

and accomplished

accordance to its
capabilities
Know yourself and seek self-
improvement
Leaders must know their own
strengths and weaknesses. They
continue to seek means in
enhancing and developing
themselves physically, mentally,
spiritually and emotionally.
Be technically and tactically
proficient
Leaders during training are subjected
to different activities and exercises
which are geared towards honoring
their expertise. As future leaders,
they are expected to be masters when
it comes to tactical and technical
aspects in their fields of service.
Seek responsibility and take
responsibility for your actions
The performance of various duties
and adherence to rules all help to
instill a strong sense of
responsibility. It also includes the
sense of accountabilityto face the
consequences of their actions should
they fall short of what is expected of
them.
Make sound and timely decisions
Leaders must be good decision
makers. In their training, they are
engaged in activities devised to
develop critical thinking and logical
reasoning.
Set the example
A leader must be a role model to his
subordinates. Leaders are therefore
trained to become individuals who
will exemplify the standard in all
aspects of their lives. They are also
expected to share these traits to their
followers.
Know your men and look out for
their well-being
Concern for one’s subordinatesmust the
priority of a good leader. He is expected
to look out for the safety of his menand
know their needs and problems.
Keep your subordinates informed
If your men know the purpose of
what you ask them to do, you will
gain their full support. Leaders
must develop the skill to instill
purpose, motivation and direction
in their subordinates.
Develop a sense of responsibility
in your subordinates
A successful leader knows how to
motivate his subordinateto work
towards the greater good. He instills
in him the knowledge that his
actions affect not just himself, but
everyone else involved in the
collective endeavor.
Ensure that the task is understood,
supervised and accomplished
It is not enough to simply tell your
people what to do; you must see to
it that the job is properly understood
and accomplished. Each task must
be properly disseminated, followed
up and finished.
Build the team
Unity, cooperation and teamwork are
the elements of a successful
organization. If all members of the
team knows how to work in harmony
with one another, their success rate
in any mission is greater.
Employ your unit in accordance
to its capabilities.
Appropriate persons should be
assigned a specific task. As leaders,
you must see to it that the jobs
conforms to the skills and
capabilities of your subordinates.
Remember:
•Leadership is not
inherent: it depends
upon traits which can
be developed and upon
the application of
techniques which can
be learned. (Saclote &
Rabago, 1995)
•"Being successful in leadership is all about
character. It's about doing the right things,
not just doing things right. Leadership is
communicating to people their worth and
potential so clearly that they come to see it
in themselves." —Stephen Covey
