Aprofessionalcodeofethicsoutlinesteachers’primary
responsibilitiestotheirstudentsanddefinestheirroleina
student’slife.
Teachers/ Educators must demonstrate 1.impartiality,
2.integrity,and 3.ethical behavior in the classroom, whether
virtual or in-person, and in their conduct with parents and co-
workers.

NationalBoardforProfessionalTeachingStandards
(NBPTS)-USA
TheNBPTS(2010)hasestablishedbothcontentand
instructionalstandardsfortheprofession,whicharebased
onthefollowingfive“corepropositions”.
1.Teachersarecommittedtostudentsandtheirlearning.
2.Teachersknowthesubjectstheyteachandhowtoteach
thosesubjectstostudent.
3.Teachersareresponsibleformanagingandmonitoring
studentlearning.
4.Teachersthinksystematicallyabouttheirpracticeand
learnfromexperience.
5.Teachersaremembersoflearningcommunities.

•ObtainingNBPTScertificationsisarigorous
endeavor,andmoststatesaddahand-someyearly
stipendtoteachers’salariesforthosewhopass
master.
•Researchstudyshowsthatteacherswhowere
NBPTScertifiedtendedtobemoreeffectivein
termsofstudentachievement(Vandervoort,Amrein
Beardsley,andBerliner2004).

•“codeofEthics”sponsoredbytheAssociationof
AmericanEducators(2010).

theNationalCouncilforTeacherEducationin
consultationwithNCERTandcoordinatedby
theSCERTs,teachersfromacrosslevelsand
regions, expert organisations
inteacherpreparationanddevelopment.

7.Teachers and the Society.

I. Teachers and Their Responsibilities:
Whoever adopts teaching as a profession assumes the
obligation to conduct himself in accordance with the ideals
of the profession.
A teacher is constantly under the scrutiny
of his students and the societyat large.
Therefore, every teacher should see that
there is no incompatibility between his
preach and practice.
The profession further requires that
the teachers should be calm, patient and
communicative by temperamentand amiable (social,
friendly) in disposition (character, temperament).

Teachers should:
1.Adheretoaresponsiblepatternofconductexpectedof
thembythecommunity.
2.Managetheirprivateaffairsinamannerconsistent
withthedignityoftheprofession.
3.Seektomakeprofessionalgrowthcontinuousthrough
studyandresearch.
4.Expressfreeandfrankopinionbyparticipationat
professionalmeetings,seminars,conferenceetc.
towardsthecontributionofknowledge.
5.Maintainactivemembershipofprofessional
organisationsandstrivetoimproveeducationand
professionthroughthem.

6.Performtheirdutiesintheformofteaching,tutorial,
practicalandseminarworkconscientiously(carefully,
alertly) and with dedication.
7.Co-operateandassistincarryingoutfunctionsrelatingto
theeducationalresponsibilitiesofthecollegeandthe
universitysuchas:
Assistinginappraisingapplicationsforadmission,advising
andcounsellingstudentsaswellasassistingintheconduct
ofuniversityandcollegeexaminations,including
supervision, invigilationand evaluation.
8.Participateinextension(talks),co-curricularandextra-
curricular(NCC,NSS)activitiesincludingcommunityService.

II. Teachers and the Students:
Teachers should:
1.Respect the right and dignity
of the studentin expressing his/her opinion.
2.Deal justlyand impartially (ನಿಷ್ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತ)with
students regardless of their Gender, Religion, Caste,
Political, Economic, Social and Physical characteristics.
3. Recognisethe difference in aptitude and
capabilities among studentsand strive to meet their
individual needs. (Every Individual is Unique)

4.Encouragestudentstoimprovetheir
attainments, develop their
personalitiesandatthesametime
contributetocommunitywelfare.
5.Inculcateamongstudentsscientific
outlookandrespectforphysicallabour
andidealsofDemocracy,Patriotism
and Peace.
6.BeAffectionate(ಮಮತೆ)tothe
studentsandnotbehaveinavindictive
(cruel)mannertowardsandofthemfor
anyreason.

7. Pay attentionto only the attainment of the student in the
Assessment of Merit.
8. Make themselves available to the studentseven beyond
their class hoursand help and guide students without any
remuneration or reward.
9. Aid students todevelop an understanding of our National
Heritage and National Goals. (Unity in Diversity)
10. Refrain (avoid doing) from inciting (provocating) students
against other students, colleagues or administration.

III. Teachers and Colleagues:
Teachers should:
1.Treat other membersof the profession in the same
manneras they themselves wish to be treated.(No
senior/Junior)
2. Speak respectfullyof other teachers and render
assistancefor professional betterment.
(should know where, what and how to speak )

3. Refrainfrom lodging unsubstantiated (unconfirmed)
allegations against colleaguesto higher authorities.
(No Gossips, loose talk)
4. Refrain from allowing considerations of caste,
creed, religion, race or sex in their professional
endeavour.(No Favouritismand Nepotism)

IV. Teachers and Authorities:
Teachersshould:
1.Dischargeprofessionalresponsibilitiesaccordingtothe
existingrulesandadheretoproceduresandmethods
consistentwiththeirprofession.
2.Refrainfromundertakinganyotheremploymentand
commitmentincludingprivatetuitionsandcoachingclasses
whicharelikelytointerferewiththeirprofessional
responsibilities.
3.Co-operateintheformulationofpoliciesoftheinstitutionby
acceptingvariousofficesanddischargeresponsibilitieswhichsuch
officesmaydemand.
4.Co-operatethroughtheirorganisationsintheformulationof
policiesoftheotherinstitutionsandacceptoffices.

5. Co-operatewith the authorities for the betterment
of the institutionskeeping in view the interest and in
conformity with dignity of the profession; should
adhere to the conditions of contract.
6. Give and expectdue notice before a change of
positionis made.
7. Take leave on unavoidable groundsand as far as
practicable with prior intimation,keeping in view
their particular responsibility for completion of
academic schedule.

V. Teachers and Non-Teaching Staff:
1.Teachers should treat the non-teaching staff as
colleaguesand equal partnersin a co-operative
undertaking, within every educational institution.
2.Teachers should help in the function of joint staff-
councilscovering both teachers and the non-
teaching staff.

VI. Teachers and Guardians
(Two main Pillars of student Life)
Teachers should:
•Contactwiththeguardiansthroughteachers’bodies
andorganizations(Teachers-parentsassociation)
•Sendreportsofthestudents’performancetothe
guardianswhenevernecessaryandmeettheguardians
inmeetingsconvenedforthepurposeformutual
exchangeofideasandforthebenefitoftheinstitution.

VII. Teachers and Society:
Teachers should:
1. Recognisethat education is a public serviceand
strive to keep the public informed of the educational
programmeswhich are being provided.
2. Work to improve education in the communityand
strengthen the community's moral and intellectual
life.
3. Be aware of social problemsand take part in such
activities as would be conducive to the progress of
societyand hence the country as a whole.

4. Performthe duties of citizenship, participate in
community activitiesand shoulder responsibilities
of public offices.
5. Refrainfrom taking part inor subscribing to or
assisting in any way activitieswhich tend to
promote feeling of hatred or enemityamong
different communities, religions or linguistic
groupsbut actively work for National Integration.

CodeofConduct(Professionalethics)-Oath
1.Iwillbetrustworthyandbuildtrustworthinessinmystudentsby:
Demonstrating professional competence to teach and learn
Being honest and encouraging honesty in all my academic and other
human activities
Honestly projecting my work by not indulging in copyright/IPR
violation
Making my services available at all times for the development of
students, the institution and the Society I serve
Providing honest and objective feedback that will help students to
assess their learning and progress towards their goals
Demonstrating the courage to speak the truth and do the right thing

2.Iwillearnrespectandhelpstudentsearnrespectby:
Treating students, colleagues and management with respect
Accepting that each individual is different
Using respectful language within and outside the portals of the
institution
Being considerate to the feelings of others
Not hurting or threatening to hurt anyone
Not indulging in activities that may hinder the progress of my
colleagues
Dealing peacefully with anger, protest or disagreement,
Learning from the students, and encouraging learning through my
teachings.

3. I will demonstrate and guide students to take responsibility for
their actions by:
•Planning carefully to achieve the desired result
•Always doing my best and demonstrating a passion for excellence
and eye for detail
•Taking actions after duly considering the possible outcomes
•Being accountable for my words, actions and behavior
•Setting a good example by being responsible for my own actions
4. I will demonstrate fairness in dealings by:
•Being objective in evaluation and interaction and showing no bias
or preference on the basis of race, color, creed, religion or gender.
•Maintaining relationships with students which will not interfere with
fair evaluation.
•Openly accepting my shortcomings through transparency of my
actions.

5. I will demonstrate caring by:
•Emotionally connecting with students, to understand their aspirations
and anxieties and help them reach their highest potential.
•Maintaining confidentiality of student information unless there is
legitimate ground for disclosure.
•Providing a safe and open environment for discussion and dealing with
sensitive issues.
•Inculcating a spirit of caring towards all fellow human beings.
6. I will demonstrate that the knowledge gained is not merely for
fulfilling materialistic ambitions but also to serve the society by:
•Working in harmony with management and colleagues to make my
institution and community better place for work
•Getting involved in community development by applying my knowledge
through carefully and systematically planned activities
•Being a good neighbor to my fellow citizens
