celebrationoftheDayoftheDeadtakesplaceonNovember1and2itisdividedinto
categories:AccordingtotheCatholiccalendar,November1correspondstoAll
SaintsDay,adaydedicatedtothe“littledead.”orchildren,andonNovember2to
theFaithfulDeparted,thatis,toadults.
Inpre-Hispanictimes,thecultofdeathwasoneofthebasicelementsofculture.
Whensomeonedied,theywereburiedwrappedinamatandtheirrelatives
organizedapartytoguidethemontheirjourneytoMictlán.Inthesameway,they
gavehimfoodthathelikedinlife,withthebeliefthathemightfeelhungry.
Thatiswhy,familiesbuiltaltarsandofferingstohonortheirdeceasedlovedones.
Thiseventhadtobecelebratedwithrespectandjoy.Peoplehadtoprepare
traditionalfood,suchaspandemuerto,anddecoratedgraveswithmarigoldflowers.
AtChristmas,familiesparticipatedinposadas,aseriesofcelebrationsthat
representedthepilgrimageofMaryandJoseph.Duringtheposadas,childrenbroke
piñatasfilledwithsweetsandfruits.Everyoneshouldhavesharedfoodandsung
Christmascarols.Forthiscelebration,onehadtomakesureeverythingwasready
forthearrivalofguests.
Mexico'sIndependenceDay,onSeptember16th,wasoneofthemostimportant
festivities.PeoplehadtogatherinsquaresandstreetstolistentotheCryofDolores,
aspeechcommemoratingthestartofthefightforindependence.Familieshadto
preparetraditionaldishessuchaschilesennogadaandwearclotheswiththecolors
oftheflag.
TheFeastoftheVirginofGuadalupe,onDecember12th,wasanotheressential
tradition.MexicanspilgrimagedtotheBasilicaofGuadalupeinMexicoCity.One
shouldhaveshowntheirdevotionbyparticipatinginmassesandprocessions.
Duringthisfestivity,peoplehadtoshowtheirfaithandgratitudetotheVirgin.
Inallthesetraditions,peoplealwayshadtomaintainasenseofcommunityand
celebration.Customsandtraditionsnotonlybroughtfamiliestogetherbutalso
strengthenedtheculturalidentityofMexico.
