INTRODUCTION
Solidwastehassignificantnegativeexternalities,withimpactonthe
environmentandhealth.Uncollectedsolidwasteincitiesprovidesa
favourablehabitatforinsects,vermin,andscavenginganimals,which
proliferateandspreadairandwaterbornediseasessuchasplague,
denguefeveranddiarrhoeaamonglocalpopulations.Whennot
disposedofwithsoundsanitarypractices,leachateproducedby
accumulatedmunicipalsolidwastecanleakintotheenvironmentand
contaminategroundwaterandsurfacewater.MSWalsocontributesto
someglobalenvironmentalchallenges,suchastheincreaseof
greenhousegas(GHG)emissionsintheatmosphere–contributing
almost_5%oftotalhuman-basedGHGemissions.Openburningin
dumpsitesreleasesparticulatesasblackcarbonandpersistentorganic
pollutants,whichbioaccumulateinthefoodchain.Inaddition,many
citiesengagedinfloodmanagementprogramsrecognisethat
uncollectedsolidwaste–whichblocksdrains–isamajorfactor
causingflooding.Soundwastemanagementisthusadailymatterfor
localpublicauthoritiesaimingatofferingasafeandqualityenvironment
totheirresidents.

METHODOLOGY
SiteVisit:
ThatipurisalocalityinGwaliorMetropolitanregionintheIndian
stateofMadhyaPradesh.Itislocatedat26°14′15″N78°13′50″E
withanareaof10km

(4sqmi).Asperthecensusof2011,the
populationofthecityis1,15,100."Thatipur"termcamefromthe"34
Battalion"whichwasthereduringBritishtime.Itlies7kmfromthe
OldcityofGwaliorandjust3kmfromnewlybuildCityCentre
Tehsilheadquarters.ItisapartofMorarSubcity.Itisusually
referredtoasthenewtownofGwaliorbecauseofitsmodern
infrastructure,wideroads,andmodernamenities.
Thecitywasvisitedondated25and26/02/2016togatherthe
informationaboutthegenerationanddisposalofsolidwaste
includingmunicipalsolidwaste.Tocollectthedata/informationwe
dividedthecityintofourdifferentzonesviz.SureshNagar,Mayur
Nagar,ShastriNagarandChauhanPayouarea.Alltheselected

Interactionwithlocalpeople:
Duringthiscourseofwork,weinteractedwithnumberofpeopleof
differentagegroups.Atleast10peoplewereinterviewedfromevery
zone.Theywereaskedtoputforwardtheirviewonsolidwaste
problemoftheirareaalongwiththeirresponseonsetofquestion

OBSERVATIONS/RESULTS
TheRelationshipbetweenSocioeconomicCharacteristics
ofRespondentsandSolidWasteDisposal
Westudiedtwosocioeconomiccharacteristicsofrespondentsin
study,employmentstatusandeducationallevelofrespondents.This
isprobablybecauseemploymentasasourceofincomemay
dependonthelevelofeducation.Figure2showsdataobtainedon
theemploymentstatusofrespondentsduringfieldwork.Majorityof
therespondentswerenotemployed(48%),makinglifedifficultfor
them.Therefore,theyembarkonsmallscaleagriculturalgardening
ontheswampyareabythefringesoftheGranvilleBrookdumpsite
asasourceofincomeandlivelihood.Theyalsousethestreamfor
washingclothesandbathingtheirchildren.Theseactivitiesexpose
theseresidentstosolidwasteparticularlyhazardouswasteswhich
canleadtovariousdiseasesthroughchemicalexposure.

Residents’ViewsontheLocationoftheDumpsiteandTheir
Surroundings
Householdresidents,especiallythosewhoareclosertothe
dumpsitearenothappyaboutthelocationofthedumpsiteintheir
community.Theycomplainedthatthedumpsiteistooclosetotheir
housescausingthemalotofsicknesses.Furthermore,theyargued
thattheirsurroundingsaresmellyandfilthyandsomeofthewastes
fromthedumpsiteoverlaptheirhousescaus-ingpollutioninthe
environment.
DisposalMethodsUsedbyResidents
Thedisposalmethodsofsolidwasteusedbyresidentsinthestudy
areawereveryunsatisfactory.Thepreferenceofeducatedpeopleto
adoptbettermethodsofwastedisposalcouldbehigherthan
illiterates.Itisobviousfromthetablethatmostofthepeoplewho
throwrefuseonopenlandanddrainsareuneducated.Thosewho
keepwasteinbinsorburnitaremostlikelythosewithhigher
education.Ingeneral,majorityoftherespondentseitherthrowtheir
wasteonlandordrainsorstreets.Equally,onlyasmallproportion
(21%)oftherespondentsdepositstheirwasteinbinsandbagsfrom
FWMCwheretheycanbetransferredtothedesignatedpointsfor
ultimatedisposal.

ImpactofHavingaDumpsiteinaNearbyCommunity
Thedumpsiteinanearbycommunityhasmanyimpactsasindicated
bytherespondentsduringthestudy.Majorityofbothnearbyandfar
awayresidentsindicatedthatthedumpsiteisthebreedingplacefor
diseasevectors,causediseases,andmakestheplacedirty.
However,thelocationofthedumpsitehasconsiderablymadethe
residentstosufferfromvariousdiseaseswithmalariabeingthe
mostprevalent.

Conclusion
ThisstudyexaminedthesolidwasteprobleminThatipurarea,
Gwalior.Resultsfromtheanalysisofdatarevealedthatbothnearby
residentsandfarawayresidentssufferedfromrelateddiseasesdue
tothelocationofthedumpsiteclosertotheirsettlements.Itwas
discoveredthatresidentslessthanfiftymetresfromthedumpsite
aremostaffectedbythedumpsite.NagarNigammustpursue
vigorouslytoenablethepoortoliveinaffordableyetclean
environment.Peopleneedtobeeducatedbyhealthmotivators
abouttheeffectsofmunicipalsolidwasteontheirhealthand........
