Introduction Nursing education is a critical component of health care system worldwide . The motivation of nursing students significantly impacts their academic performance, professional development, and patients care outcomes ( Carillo et al., 2022).
Background Nursing workforce is the largest group within the healthcare system and a vital part of health care professionals, playing a significant role in providing high-quality. Globally, the study done by Jones and Kim revealed that 51% of respondents considered the competitive salaries and benefits offered in nursing as significant motivating factors.
Cont ’ Moreover, 18.3% Of Participants Cited The Availability Of Tuition Reimbursement And Loan Forgiveness Programs, (Jones Et .Al2022) 62.3% of Students acknowledged t he Potential For Job Mobility And Opportunities For Travel as Motivating Factors, While 54% Highlighted The Flexible Work Schedules Characteristic Of Nursing Professions, (Jones Et .Al2022)
Back Ground Cont ’ 41.9% are influenced by job security, 40,6% by recognition of their degree by European Union 26,9% because it is a prestigious profession, 14.4%, their dream from childhood, 3.1% influenced by parents,(Stoyanova, 2021) In Europe, studies shown that nursing career choice is influenced by many factors ,
Background Cont ’ But also they highlighted some hindering factors like: location and responsibility for nursing care financial constraints and educational challenges,( Lommi et al., 2024).
Background cont ’ The unavailability of the bookshop on campus,( Pinehas et al., 2017). In West Africa, the study done in Benin shows that a lesser percentage of males compared to females will choose nursing as career , in 377 males, 68.5% and 388 females, 94.6% will choose nursing .
Background cont ’ while 31.5% and 5.4% will not choose nursing as career,(Okafor & Onokwai , 2020 ) . In East Africa, studies revealed that 90% of students still choose nursing for varying reasons like desire to help others, good pay etc. In Rwanda, there is no published study about that
Problem Statement In recent years, shortage of qualified nursing staff and high turnover rate were highlighted in developing countries as well as in Rwanda. Therefore, students who do not choose freely to enter the career, will not remain in.
Problem statement T his will cause an increase in turnover rate and shortage of nursing staff. This research will lead to significant improvement in both the education and healthcare sectors, fostering a healthier, more resilient society.
Purpose of the Study The purpose of this study is to investigate factors influencing nursing career as choice among undergraduates students at a selected Public University in Rwanda.
Specific Objectives To describe motivating factors influencing nursing career as choice among undergraduates students at a selected public university in Rwanda Identify hindering factors influencing nursing career as choice among undergraduates students at a selected public university in Rwanda Explore relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and factors influencing nursing career as choice among undergraduates students at a selected public university in Rwanda.
Research questions What are the key motivational factors influencing nursing career as choice among undergraduates students ? What are the hindering factors influencing nursing career as choice among undergraduates students at selected public university in Rwanda? What is the relationship between social demographic characteristics factors influencing nursing career as choice among undergraduates students?
Scope of the study content of the scope: This study investigate factors influencing nursing career as choice among undergraduates students in the University of Rwanda, Huye and Rwamagana Campuses.
SCOPE cont ’ Geographical scope : The study will be done at the University of Rwanda, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Huye and Rwamagana Campuses. Time scope : The study will take a period of six weeks of data collection
Significance Of The Study T o the Nursing Practice Ultimately, the quality of patient care is influenced by the composition and characteristics of the nursing workforce. Findings from this research will help nursing practice to promote career development of nursing workforce .
To the Nursing Research Understanding the factors that influence students' decisions to pursue nursing career can inform career development initiatives within the nursing profession. By providing students with information about career pathways, job prospects, and professional development opportunities, healthcare organizations can support students in making informed decisions about their future careers and promote career advancement within the nursing profession.
To the Nursing Leadership and Management By identifying barriers and influencing factors to pursuing nursing career, policymakers and educational institutions can develop targeted strategies to attract more individuals to the profession, increase the nursing workforce and help in developing initiatives to retain nurses in the profession.
To Nursing Education Understanding factors influencing nursing career as choice, will help nursing education in curriculum development and admission process will be improved. Nursing education will organize the way of motivating students so that they will make informed choice to enter the nursing career .
CHAPTER TWO LITERATURE REVIEW Introduction A literature review of a mature topic addresses the need for a critique of, and the potential reconceptualization of, the expanding and more diversified knowledge base of the topic as it continues to develop,( Ramdhani et al., 2014)
Concept of the Study The literature review aims to explore various factors affecting nursing career as choice among undergraduates students, drawing insights from existing research.
CHAPTER THREE: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY During my study a quantitative research will be used. RESEARCH DESIGN: Descriptive, cross-sectional design will be used in this study . Study population: The study will be included all undergraduates nursing students registered in UR,
Cont ’ the total number is 1275 in Huye and Rwamagana Campuses,(From UR archive). Sampling strategy: Simple random sampling will be used. Sample Size: Sample size will be 291 respondents
Data Collection After getting the ethical clearance and the permission from the UR /CMHS , appropriate students will be informed about the purpose of the study. All those who agree to fill in the electronic questionnaires . The completed questionnaires will be sent on the researcher email the same day.
Data Collection Tool The questionnaire is borrowed and is adapted with the permission and used in data collection. Validity of the instrument: The questionnaire is submitted to the supervisor for content validity assessment. Reliability : the researcher first will administer the same opinion to 10 pilots participants from nurses students registered in public University.
Data Analysis All data will be analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 21. Data management : The collected information will be stored in a secure database and valid for 5 years
Limitations and challenges Due to time and financial constraints, the researcher used a smaller sample size, not conducting the study in all Nursing universities in Rwanda. For that reason, the researcher can not generate results for the whole country; instead of the study results are generalizable to the sample size.
