DESIGNATION & LOCATION :- In 1981, Chilika Lake was the first wetland in India to be designated as a Ramsar site under the Ramsar Convention. The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty that aims to conserve and use wetlands sustainably. Chilika Lake is located in the Puri, Khurda , and Ganjam districts of Odisha. It covers an area of 1,165 Square kilometres . Chilika Lake spreads to the Daya river's mouth.
CHILIKA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY(CDA) In 1992, the Government of Odisha, concerned by the degradation of the lake's ecosystem and cognizant of significant numbers of people who were dependent upon the lake's resources, set up the CDA. In 2003, a collaboration of Indian and Japanese experts led to a friendly relationship between Chilika lake and Saroma Lake in Japan called Sister Wetlands . SAROMA LAKE , JAPAN
IMPORTANT PLACES OF CHILIKA:- NALABAN:- Nalbana means a weed covered island In the Odia language . It is a major island in the center of the lake with an area of 15.53 km 2 (6.00 sq mi). Nalbana Bird Sanctuary or Nalbana Island is the core area of the Ramsar designated wetlands of Chilika Lake . It was declared a bird sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act in 1972 . In the heart of the park, one can see thousands of birds descending during the migratory season. The island disappears during monsoon season due to inundation only to emerge again in post-monsoon.
MANGALAJODI BIRD SANCTUARY Mangalajodi is an olden village under Tangi block in Khordha district of Odisha at the northern edge of Chilika Lake . The scenery of this village and its wetlands attracts the visitors In 2017
Satapada Dolphin sanctuary:- It is located on the southern part of the Chilika Lake near to village Panasapada which is 36 km away from Puri . Satapada is also famous for the Sea Mouth Island where Chilika Lake meets the Bay of Bengal . Dolphins are the main attraction of Satapada boat ride. The highest population of Irrawaddy dolphins in the world are seen in Chilika.
CHILIKA – SEA MOUTH :- IN THIS PLACE WHERE SEA AND CHILIKA ARE MEET EACH OTHER. THIS ISLAND ALSO KNOWN AS RAJHANS ISLAND. THIS LAND VERY ATTRACTIVE AND A VERY BEAUTYFULL PLACE FOR TURISMS. AT THE WINTER SEASON THERE ARE SO MUCH CROWED THAN OTHER SEASON. YOU CAN REACH THERE BY ONLY BOAT FROM SATAPADA , BALUGAON AND BARAKUL.
MAA KALIJAI TEMPLE:- This temple is situated on an island where the presiding deity is Goddess Kalijai . The localites strongly believe in this Goddess and every fisherman in Chilika bows down to her before setting out for their fishing activities. Besides regular days, during Makar Sankranti time, the temple witnesses the maximum visitors. The temple was built in 1717 by Sri Jagannath Mansingh , the king of Bankad . The temple is said to be built on the site where a boat carrying Goddess Kalijai sank in a storm.
