PSYCHOLOGICAL PREPAREDNESS
Migration is a universal phenomenon which existed with the
subsistence of the human being on earth.
People migrate from one place to another for several reasons,
but the goal and main reason behind changing the residence
would be improving the living conditions or escape from debts,
and poverty.
Migration has a great impact on any geographical area and it is
known as one of the three basic components of population
growth of any particular region (the other two are mortality and
fertility).
Migration involves certain phases to go through: it is a process.

•Many times lack of preparedness, difficulties in adjusting to the new
environment, complexity of the local system, language difficulties,
cultural disparities and adverse experiences would cause distress to
the migrants .
•More subsequently it has a negative impact on mental well-being.
•Due to globalization, modernization, improved technologies and
developments in all sectors, the migration and its impact on human
well being is a contemporary issue.

•When individuals migrate from on place to another, the process
involves a serious of factors such as preparation and fulfilling all
procedure, reaching the destination, adjusting to the new culture and
society, compromising with their beliefs and practices,
accommodation, assimilation etc.. And this process may not be
favorable to everyone.
•There are some special group such as women, children, elderly,
pregnant women's etc… who are more prone to certain mental
health issues during the migration process.
•migration is a complex process which affects peoples differently. Most
often it is associated with stressful events, barriers and challenges
because of which the psychosocial issues is more prevalent among
migrants.
INTERVENTIONS
IOM came to force on 1951, it has been involved in implementing
variety of activities and programs to help the migrant population.
Some of them are:
•Resettlement and repatriation services of refugees
•Assisted voluntary return and reintegration
•Migration health assessment and travel assistance services etc….
The above programs are aimed at trying to make the migration
process easier and less complicated and responding and assisting
to those who are negatively affected from the migration.

Providing information about migration, preparing migrants, ensuring the
necessary health and public services will help in preventing expected
psychological; distress and promoting mental well-being among
migrants.
•Make sure that he/she has a valid travel document
if the returnee does not have a valid passport or other travel
document ,he/she should contact Ethiopian embassy in Djibouti
for the issuance of a laissez passer.
If the returnees have documents such as driving license, school
certificates, diploma and degree, it should be authenticated by
Ethiopian embassy in the host country and respective ministries of
the host country before their departure
Before the Return
•Make sure that all necessary arrangements regarding
permanent or temporary accommodation up on return are
established
•Acquire all the necessary information concerning arrival
details and onward transportation to the final destination
•Make sure to collect all relevant documents (diplomas, birth
certificates, residence/work permits, medical reports,
etc.)from authorities in host country
•Inform the Diplomatic/Consular Office of Ethiopia
•If possible, inform families about your return
AFTER THE RETURN
•Up on arrival the passport is stamped by the immigration office at Bole
International Airport/ Train station at the date of entry.
•The foremost thing to do after return is applying for national ID card.
National /residential ID card is mandatory to process any activity in the
country.
•The returnee can get telephone number immediately after the return by
applying local telecommunication in person
•Returnees should contact the IOM office within one month following
their return and discuss about their reintegration plan.
•assessing the market and feasible business
opportunities will be also important for those who
want to start micro business as part of their social
reintegration returnees.
Returnees should try to engage in different social
activities (idir, ekub) that expedite their social
integration.
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.Health care
•getting a health service from government health centres or hospitals with fair
price/for free-if the returnee presents a certificate that testifies the individual
is poor to cover his medical cost .The letter is from his/her kebele(lowest
administrative unit in government system).
•a returnee can get a health care service from private clinics/hospitals with
higher service fee from his own.

3. HOUSING ASSISTANCE
Many people chose to use brokers and real estate agents. Most of these brokers real
estate agents do not operate from a permanent office. They are normally reached
informally either at their private home or via mobile phone. Brokers often charge 20%
of the first payment for their work.

Help people use their natural coping mechanisms to regain a
sense of control:
Get enough rest, eat as regularly as possible, drink water
Talk and spend time with family and friends
Discuss problems with someone you trust
Relax: walk, sing, pray, play with children

Avoid alcohol or drugs, caffeine, nicotine
Attend to personal hygiene
Keep routines, especially for children
