THE SOURCES OF WEATHER DATA LESSON 2
OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, we should be able to: Explain the meaning of raw, primary and secondary data. Describe how raw data can be collected. Take data from a web page and import it into a spreadsheet. Explain importing files and how to import data into a spreadsheet.
KEY WORDS Primary data: Data you have collected yourself. Secondary data: Data collected by someone else. Importing data: To put the data created in one software package into a different software package.
HOW DO YOU GET WEATHER DATA By collecting the data yourself By using raw data that others have collected
IMPORTING DATA FILES INTO A SPREADSHEET A data logger may store the data it collects as one type of file and you may want to analyse the data in that file using spreadsheet software such as excel. This can be done in two ways: 1.You could print out the file using the software in which it was created. Then you could type all of the data into the new software package. Disadvantage is that it takes a longer time and typing errors may occur. 2.You could import (i.e. transfer) the data from the software package in which it was created into the new spreadsheet program.
PLANNING AND CREATING A SIMPLE PUBLIC INFORMATION SYSTEM LESSON 3
OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, we should be able to: Investigate a number of websites that have data about the weather. Differentiate between Microsoft worksheets and workbooks. Create Microsoft worksheets to represent the three stages of computing: input, process and output.
What to achieve You will learn how to make your own public information system. This public information system will take data from a web page and put it into a spreadsheet which will then be used to process the data and output it as graphs/charts.
Workbook and Worksheet A worksheet is like a page that contains rows and columns that data can be entered into. A workbook in the spreadsheet package Excel is a file that contains one or more worksheets.
The three stages of computing on a different sheet. Each of the three stage can be carried out on a different worksheet.
GETTING NEW DATA DIRECTLY FROM A WEBSITE LESSON 4
OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: Create worksheets for input, process and output. Explain web query. Import data using a web query. Plot two line graphs on the same set of axes.
KEY WORDS URL: Uniform Resource Locator: the address that defines the route to a file on the Internet. It is the address of a website. Web query: A query that gets data from the Internet. The data is usually in the form of a table.
Taking data from a web page A new public information system is to be set up which will automatically take the data from a website and put it into the input worksheet. Then, the process worksheet will perform the processing and the output worksheet will contain the results such as graphs and charts.
AUTOMATING PROCESSES IN A SIMPLE INFORMATION PROCESSING SYSTEM LESSON 5
OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: Use query to copy share prices into a worksheet. Use Paste Link to copy data from one worksheet to another. Use calculations and plot a pie chart of the results. BACKGROUND By using a web query, you can build an information system that can be kept up to date and perform any processing automatically.
Gambling on Shares The value of shares may change from day to day. People who own shares like to keep track of them to see which are doing well or not. The information is important to know the shares to sell or buy.
EVALUATING A PUBLIC INFORMATION SYSTEM LESSON 6
OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: Explain what is meant by the word “evaluation”. Produce criteria for evaluating a completed project. Evaluate your own solution to an ICT project.
Evaluation is a process that critically examines a program/systems. It involves collecting and analyzing information about a system/program's activities, characteristics, and outcomes. Its purpose is to make judgments about a program, to improve its effectiveness, and/or to inform programming decisions What is Evaluation
Evaluation is a way of measuring if your system really serves the purpose of its make. Was the system easy to use? Did it give you the information you required? Etc. There are two types of evaluation: Evaluation of work produced personally. Evaluation of work produced by others.
Evaluate this…
Criteria for evaluation Was the system easy to use? Were all items of information arranged in a logical order on the screen? Did the system give all of the information required by the user? Did the system meet the user’s need? Was the information given in the most appropriate way e.g. text, tables, graphics, graphs and charts? Was the information updated regularly.
Evaluate this….
CREATE YOUR OWN PUBLIC INFORMATION SYSTEM LESSON 7
OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: Design and produce public information system. Evaluate the system they have created.
Background You will be working in groups to produce your own public information system about the weather of different places that people love to live outside UK. You will use spreadsheet to design your system: input, process and output. You will then evaluate your public information system.
