developmentoftechnologycomesthe
Internetandtheemergingissuesthatit
brings.AccordingtotheInternetWorld
Statistics,thereareapproximately2,267,
233,742internetusersworldwidein2012.
Today,itisnodoubtthatsuchnumberhas
dramaticallyincreased.

ThepurposeoftheInternethasbeenchanging
fromtimetotime.Decadesago,manypeopleused
theinternetmainlytoresearchandacquirerelevant
informationthatcouldbevaluableintheirfieldsof
studyandlifeendeavors.Ithasalsobeenusedto
communicatewithpeople.Today,however,many
peopleusetheinternetastheirmainsourceof
entertainmentandsocialization.Youcanevenbet
thatmanyoftheseinternetusersonlygoonlineto
checktheirFacebookaccounts.

ItisimportanttolearnthatthestatisticsPortal
reports1.44billionmonthlyactiveFacebookusersasof
thefirstquarterof2015.Activeusersaredefinedasthose
whohaveloggedintoFacebookduringthelast30days.
Interestingly,Facebookusersin2008didnotevenreach
ahundredmillion.Butinthethirdquarterof2012,the
numberofactiveFacebookusersskyrocketedand
surpassed1billion.Furthermore.Asofthatquarter,the
socialnetworkhas1.25billionactivemobile
users.
Aquestionremains,however;whatisreallythe
impactofFacebookinourworldtoday?

TheFacebookcanbeusedtoconnectwithpeople.
Probably,allofushavefoundfriendsandacquaintances
thatwewouldliketoreconnectwithintheFacebook.This
hasbeenoneofthefastestwaystochatandcommunicate
withpeopleallovertheworld.Wecanusethissocial
networktoinvitefriendstoanimportantevent,inform
peopleofsignificantnewsinourlives,andviceversa.This
hasalsobeenaveryeffectivewaytoadvertisebusiness
pursuits,lookforjobopportunities,validatethe
credibilityofacertainindividualororganization,be
informedaboutimportantworldphenomenon,searchfor
greatleisureplaces,findagreateducationalopportunity
andmanymore.

However,iftheFacebookrenderscountlessbenefits,it
mayalsocausedangertouserswhoarenotcautiousandalert.
Forexample,addingstrangers,fakeaccounts,and
untrustworthyacquaintancesonFacebookmaycausethreaton
theindividualandhisorherfamilysecurity.Ifnotcareful,one
mayalsobeavictimofbusinessandotherorganizationalscams.
Otherpeoplemayevenbelieveoninformationandnewsfrom
unreliablesources,andcauseotherpeopletobemisledby
sharingsuchinformation.Pornographyandothermaterialsthat
arenotappropriateforyoungpeoplecanbeaccessedeasily.
Cyberbullying,andpersecutionhavecausedmanypeoplepain
andsuffering.Sometimes,opportunitiesforgenuineface-to-face
interactionaresacrificed,andprecioustimeiswasted.

KimberlyS.Young’sresearchstudyentitled
“InternetAddiction:ANewClinicalPhenomenonand
ItsConsequences”in2013,tacklesverycriticalissues
thathappeninrealityamonginternetusers,inwhich
sheexplainsthattheInternethasgreateffects,notjust
tothestudentsandemployees,butalsotofamily
relationships.Infact,threesurprisingproblemsamong
usersemergedafterconductingthestudy:(1)cyber
affair,(2)studentsinternetabuseand(3)employee
internetabuse.Socialmedia,specificallytheFacebook,
playagreatroleinsuchissues.

So,istheFacebookablessingtotheworldof
communicationandsocialmedia?Orisitacauseforworry
amongtheguardiansofsocietalethicsandmorality?Isitaboon
orabane?
Well,aswereflectupontheimpactofsocialmedia,itis
importanttorememberthatintheend,itisstilluptouswhether
tousesocialmediatoouradvantageorallowittodestroyus.
TheFacebookandothersocialmediacanbeverybeneficialif
usedproperly.Itcanhelpusconnectwithpeopleandpursue
greatopportunities.Pornography,cyberbullying,andother
onlinescamswillnotbeabletoaffectusifwedonotallowitto
enterintoouronlinelives.Becauseintheend,thenatureofthe
internetisnotreallythechallenge–butthedisciplineofits
users.
