About the Commission First education commission of indepedent India Appointed in 1948 by Government of India Chairman – Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan , Former VC of Banaras Hindu University and Second president of India Inaugurated by Abdul Kalam Azad, the then minister of education Consisted of 10 members including Dr Radhakrishnan , Dr Zakir Hussain and Dr Lakshmanswami Mudaliar Submitted the report in 25 th August 1949

Aim of the Commission Reconstruction of universities was essential for the socio-economic development after independence. To study the problems of university education in India and to suggest improvements for the development of university education.

Teaching Staff Appointing quality teachers Categories: Professors, Readers, Lecturers, Instructors Attempts to improve their qualifications and quality Revising pay scales – descent and dignified pay scale as well as promotion based on merit Leave for higher studies Ratio of junior and senior posts – 2:1 Retirement age – 60, for professors - 64

Duration of Course and Working Days Admission after 12 years of school education 180 working days excluding examination Number of students for university and affiliated college – 3000:1500
