RATIO AND PROPORTION 4 : 6 4 notebooks for every 6 ballpens
LEARNING OBJECTIVES Define and illustrate the meaning of ratio and proportion using concrete or pictorial models. Find the missing term in a proportion (direct, inverse, and partitive). Solve problems involving ratio and proportion.
RATIO It is a comparison of two different things or numbers. We generally express the two numbers as a ratio using a colon (:). The colon is read as “is to”. Example The ratio of the number of notebooks to the number of pens is 3 : 6 3 notebooks is to 6 pens

ACTIVITY # 1 I have 60 marbles in a jar. 12 0f them are red, 15 are blue, 18 are yellow, and the rest are purple. Express the following ratios in colon form. The ratio of blue to yellow marbles is __________. The ratio of blue to purple marbles is __________. The ratio of red to blue marbles is __________. The ratio of purple marbles to the total marbles is __________. The ratio of yellow marbles to the total marbles is __________. Texto
PROPORTION It is a pair of equal ratios. = 2 : 6 1 : 3 means extremes The product of the means is equal to the product of extremes.
TYPES OF PROPORTION DIRECT PROPORTION INDIRECT PROPORTION PARTITIVE PROPORTION Two quantities are said to be directly proportional if change in one produces a change in the other in same direction. Two quantities are said to be indirectly proportional if an increase in one produces a decrease in the other, or vice versa. A number is divided into equal parts proportional to a given ratio. It involves part to whole ratios equivalent to each other.
DIRECT PROPORTION Steps in finding the missing term in a direct proportion. 1 Identify the means and extremes. 2 3 Multiply the means and the extremes. Divide both sides by the given number that is paired with the unknown. 2 : 3 = N : 6 means extremes 3 x N = 2 x 6 3N = 12 3N = 12 3 3 N = 4
40N = 160 40 40 Two jeepneys can transport 40 people. How many jeepneys are needed to transport 80 people? EXAMPLE 2 : 40 = N : 80 N = 4 DIRECT PROPORTION
INDIRECT PROPORTION Steps in finding the missing term in a indirect proportion. 1 Identify the 1st term, 2nd term, 3rd term and 4th term. 2 3 Multiply the 1st term and 2nd term, then 3rd term and 4th term. Divide both sides by the given number that is paired with the unknown. 4 : 3 = 6 : N 4 x 3 = 6 x N 12 = 6N 12 = 6N 6 6 2 = N 2nd term 1st term 3rd term 4th term
36 = 6N 6 6 Four men can complete a project in 9 days. How many men will be needed if the project is to be completed in 6days? EXAMPLE 4 : 9 = N : 6 6 = N INDIRECT PROPORTION
ACTIVITY # 2 Identify whether each problem is a direct, inverse or partitive proportion. Then, solve. Mario earned Php720 for working 5 hours. If he works 9 hours, how much would he earn? If 4 men can finish 25 tables in 7 days, how many days can 8 men finish the same number of desks? A sum of Php16 500 is divided in the ratio 2:3:8. Find the value of each share. A road contractor takes 9 laborers to finish the job in 80 days. How long will 12 laborers finish the job? A basketball player makes 4 baskets in 5 tries. How many baskets can be made in 70 tries?
