RECREATIONAL THERAPY

INTRODUCTION Recreational therapy uses leisure activities to help people with specific health conditions to improve their skills, abilities, overall health, and emotional well-being.  

DEFINITION “It is planned therapeutic activity that enables people with limitations to engage in recreational experiences.”  

AIMS… To encourage social interactions. To decrease withdrawal tendencies. To provide outlet for feelings. To promote socially acceptable behaviour. To develop skills, talent and abilities. To increase physical confidence and a feeling of self-worth.

POINTS TO BE KEPT IN MIND… Provide a non-threatening and non-demanding environment. Provide activities that are relaxing and without rigid guideline and time frame. Provide activities that are enjoyable and self satisfying.

TYPES OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES : INDOOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES These activities carried out in side the room or a place. Eg. . Reading, writing, video games, playing cards. OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES Those activities which you enjoy out of your place. Eg. . Heating, Camping, Swimming

FORMS OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES :   Motor forms : These can be further divided into F undamental ( Games such as hockey and football) Accessory( play activity and dancing)   Sensory forms: These can be either visual, e.g., looking at motion pictures, play or auditory such as listening to a concert.   Intellectual forms: These includes reading, debating and so on.    

BENEFITS Enables clients to reach desired goal. Clients make choices during the planning process. May feel a sense of control over decisions affecting their care and treatment. Participation has physical, cognitive, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual benefits for Individuals as well as for the health care system and society as a whole.

STEPS OF RECREATIONAL THERAPY: Assessment: Working with client to identify health status, needs and strengths provide data for interventions. Planning : Priorities are set, goals are formulated, objectives are developed, programmes, strategies, and approaches are specified, and means of evaluation are determined. Intervention: The action phase of the therapy. Involves actual execution of the programme plan by the specialist and client. Evaluation: The goals and objectives are appraised.

USE OF RECREATIONAL THERAPY: Recreational therapists may work with a wide range of individuals requiring health services including: Geriatric Mental illness Addiction Developmental disabilities Paediatric clients

ROLE OF NURSE IN RECREATIONAL THERAPY : Encourages the patients to communicated and express his feelings. She must provide a non-threatening and non-demanding environment. She must be providing activities that are relaxing and without rigid guideline. Nurse must help the patient to develop skills, talents abilities. She must provide activities that are enjoyable and self satisfying.
