Representation of Masculinity in the Media Omar Rasoul

The Buffoon/ Dadiot The title is in bright red which is a colour that usually connotes danger or trouble. The children in the image are positioned on and above the man and are pulling his tie and surrounding him giving the implication that they have dominance over him. His facial expression indicate that he is in pain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes The poster for the film 'Daddy Day Care' clearly reflects the masculinity stereotype of 'The Buffoon/ Dadiot ' because it mirrors the stereotype that men are not good with children or in roles that are stereotypically assigned to women. This is primarily done in the poster through the camera angle and the mis en scene, the title is in bright red a colour that typically connotes danger or trouble. Additionally the title takes up a significant amount of space on the poster and the inference we can make from this is that the dad is very unfit for this role, also the children in the image are positioned on and above the man and are pulling his tie and surrounding him giving the implication that they have dominance over him or that they are causing him trouble.

The Metrosexual Man He has his shirt open and the light reflects on his bear chest this could be seen as sexualising him as it spotlights his physique. He is clean shaven, indicates that he cares for his appearance and this further links to the idea of the metrosexual man. The product is smaller on the advert compared to him, he is the main focus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes The advert for the 'Calvin Klein Cologne' clearly reflects the masculinity stereotype of 'The Metrosexual Man' because it heavily reflects the man's appearance, meaning that there is more of a focus on the man himself than the product. This is done for example through the mid shot of the man who is sitting slouched down with his shirt open and the lighting is directed at his bear chest to make it more visible and the amount of skin showing in the image is to sexualise him. Furthermore, the way his hair is trimmed and he is clean shaven indicates that he cares for his appearance and this further links to the idea of the metrosexual man.

The Spornosexual Man He is not wearing a shirt to emphasise his physique and his sex appeal. The cover line "Double the sex she wants you to try this!" emphasises the suggestive theme of the image and the spornosexual stereotype The cover line "Train smarter gym free Abs!" covers the sports aspect of the spornosexual stereotype. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Notes The magazine cover for 'Men's Health' clearly reflects the masculinity stereotype of 'The Spornosexual Man' because he is not wearing a shirt to emphasise his physique but also because the cover line also reflect the sport and training aspect of the spornosexual stereotype. They also talk about the suggestive aspect of the spornosexual for example the cover line "Double the sex, she wants you to try this!" covers the suggestive aspect, giving the image a suggestive connotation and the "Train smarter" cover line covers the sport/training aspect.

New Family Man He knows his children very well as he talks to each of them and they have a good relationship. He has a good relationship with his wife as we see in the clip when he prepares her coffee. The suburb setting indicates how perfect he is as a father and a family man in the stereotypical white neighbourhood/suburban sense. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes The advert for this cereal brand reflects the masculinity stereotype of 'New Family Man’. Throughout the advert we see the father walking around and as he describes the perks of being a dad and does this we see him communicate with his family, through that we can infer he is a hands on and good father. The setting also links to the fact that he is a good dad as it is set in the suburbs and the house is perfect which further creates this implication of the perfect family man providing a good life for his family. He is also good with his wife as we see him prepare her coffee and hands it too her, showing him as a proactive husband which further links to the new family man stereotype.

The Strong Silent Type Batman is on the poster twice and he is positioned above the other characters further showing his strength and dominance. In the poster he is also seen above the other characters in the darkness further emphasising his mysteriousness In their interactions in the film while the woman talks to him, he sits their in silence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes The poster for the film 'Batman(1989)' clearly reflects the masculinity stereotype of 'The Strong Silent Type' because as we can see through all the characters on the poster he has his mouth completely shut and they have their mouth slightly open linking to his lack of dialogue/silence, additionally he is on the poster positioned above all the characters and then amongst them further mirroring his stoic and mysterious nature he is both amongst and above all characters. Scenes from the film clearly show he links to the strong silent type stereotype as not only does he save the damsel in distress but when he is talked to he is silent linking to his strength and silence.

The Action Hero He is only wearing a tactical vest that leaves his arms and chest exposed, further emphasising his physique. There are explosions in the background and the main character is holding a gun which emphasises the action heavy/chaotic tone of the film. In the clips from the film he is in command as he orders his team around and saves a member of his team, whilst simultaneously fighting enemies clearly reflecting the dominant action hero stereotype. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes The poster and clip for the film 'Predator' clearly reflects the masculinity stereotype of 'The Action Hero' because in the case of the poster the character 'Dutch' takes up a large amount of the poster and his costume is a tactical vest that leaves his arms and chest exposed which puts his Physique on display. He has a serious facial expression that mirrors the stereotypical action hero who is big, muscular and serious. The 'action hero' masculinity stereotype is further emphasised through the props in the poster mainly the weapon Dutch is wielding which as we already know from countless action movies is the action hero's main prop. The clip I have chosen clearly shows how the main character mirrors the 'action hero' stereotype because he is in charge of the situation as he not only saves one of he's team members but also gives them orders, whilst fighting the enemy. Editing in the clip such as jump cuts and cross cutting creates the fast paced, and intense action feel.

The Dynamic Entrepreneur ('The Big Shot') Direct mode of address gives the idea that he is confident. The cover line creates the inference that he is well respected, influencial and successful. He is wearing a suit connoting he is a more serious and formal successful individual. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes The magazine cover featuring Jay Z clearly reflects the masculinity stereotype of 'The Dynamic Entrepreneur ('The Big Shot')' because it represents him in a professional manner through his clothing as he is wearing a suit, connoting success and status. In addition to this the inference we can make from the cover lines is that he is well respected as he is in "The 100 Most Influential People In The World" Another inference we can make from this is that he is successful in his business dealings. His facial expression and direct mode of address also indicates confidence and this again links to the idea of him being the 'Big shot’ and highly successful.

Athletic Stereotype Holds Basketball above the hoop demonstrating his athletic skill. Two cheerleaders are clinging on to him showing he is winning the adoration of women. He is dominating on the field and possibly off the field. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Notes The advert for the 'Axe spray' clearly reflects the masculinity stereotype of 'Athletic stereotype' because he is demonstrating his athletic ability through the basketball we see him hold above the hoop and how high he has jumped in the air, but also we see he is loved because of his ability, with two cheerleaders clinging on to him and looking at him almost admiringly creating the inference that he is loved because of his athletic skill which further links this advert to the 'Athletic stereotype’ the successful and idolised athlete. In addition to this, it further emphasises the point that he dominates on and off the field with sports through his skill and with women through the cheerleaders all on him.
