This issue is traced back to historical shifts in Europe, where religious conflicts led to the exclusion of religion from public life and the adoption of external norms enforced by powerful states, as argued by thinkers like Thomas Hobbes. This context laid the foundation for logical positivism, which prioritizes observable knowledge and dismisses moral and internal insights.
The critique of positivism highlights its flawed maxim, "you can only manage what you can measure," leading to meaningless performance metrics and unethical practices like fake journals. Honest data analysis is impossible within this framework, as it ignores the narrative's influence on data interpretation.
The talk contrasts external ethics—rules aimed at avoiding punishment—with internal ethics driven by personal integrity and spiritual values, emphasizing the latter. Drawing on Islamic teachings, it advocates for transformative teaching methods that inspire students and impart practical knowledge related to life experiences.

What is the basis for ethics and integrity? Academic culture does not teach ethics and integrity Publish or Perish, combined with survival of the fittest, leaves no room for ethics/integrity. Transformation of Europe was caused by extremely violent religious wars which persisted for a century. One of the lessons for European was that internal norms are useless – one must build external framework: The Leviathan of Hobbes This is the WRONG lesson, and we are seeing consequences today.

Consequences of Logical Positivism Knowledge is only about Observables (external reality) What can be seen, can be measured. All knowledge can be reduced to numbers. Data Analysis will lead to complete knowledge about world. Morality is meaningless noise – we cannot measure honesty and integrity (as internal qualities of the heart) All of these are FALSE – and EASILY PROVEN to be wrong. Nonetheless, these concepts are built into Western Education.
You cannot manage what you cannot measure This leads to attempts to quantify performance. Disastrous results everywhere! Goodhart’s Law: If a measurable outcome is turned into a performance measure, it becomes unusable and meaningless Specifically, measures of Academic Performance have led to massive problems in Academia. Positivism makes honest data analysis IMPOSSIBLE LP says that ALL the information is in the data. This is absolutely false. All data analyses incorporate huge amounts of subjective knowledge. The NARRATIVE controls the analysis. Due to influence of LP, we are UNAWARE of the subjective aspects and present them as objective, leading to dishonest analysis.
Two critical non-positivist concepts, essential for data analysis Probability: If I flip a coin, Heads occur with 50% probability. This is a statement about the possibility of an alternative state of the world, where Tails would have occurred. Impossible to observe. Causality: Variable X is exogenous, and the cause of Y. Causation is impossible to observe. We can only observe correlations.
A New Definition of Probability: bit.ly/rsia08a Frequency Theory, Subjective Probability, Logical Probability – all FAILED attempts to define Positivist Probability. Probability is one-directional in time: Future events have probability, past events do not. This is the (unknown) difference between confidence intervals and probability. This is also why Bayes Theorem is WRONG. Probability is always conditional. What is the probability of a recession? Look at past 100 years and count recession years? But what about conditioning on various kinds of past events, like wars, IMF conditions, etc , etc ?
Causality: Unobservable Y= a + b X + error :Assumptions: X is exogenous and causes Y. Because Causality cannot be understood by positivists, no one really understands what these mean. Only correlations are observable, causation is not. It is a statement about a necessary connection, valid in many different unobservable states of the world. One Example to Illustrate. Supply Side Economic Model: K,L => Y => C C = a + b Y Demand Side Keynesian Model: C d is demand for consumer goods Y = C d + I d , Economy produces according to perceived demand. Y f is forecast of income. This determines C d and I d . This determines actual production, which determines actual Consumption and Income. Failure to distinguish between exogenous, endogenous, and causality leads to massive confusion.
What are implications for Research Ethics? External Ethics lead to methods to get around penalties. No basis exists for internal ethics within the Positivist Theories of Knowledge.
Internal Ethics for Research Ethics is only possible using internal motivation: for Akhira , and for betterment of soul. But how is this possible? What are we teaching them currently? Economics: Life is about pursuit of Pleasure. Management: Life is about pursuit of Profits. Public Policy: Policy choices should maximize Wealth. All dramatically wrong lessons. Strongly in conflict with Islam!
Golden Opportunity Dominant Theories and Research are so bad that it is very easy to make valuable contributions. One Reason for Plagiarism and Dishonesty is: the feeling that we cannot make valuable contributions. This arises from two reasons The Dazzle of Western Knowledge: It seems awesome and impossible to master with sufficient expertise to make significant contributions. Lack of Self-Confidence: We have slave mentalities arising from the experience of colonization. This creates an inferiority complex.

We can make up better stories by thinking about how the real world works, and how humans behave. We can do better data analysis by using modern techniques, not available earlier. Critical Insight: Wrong Mathematics Mathematical Modeling currently in use within economics is NOT adapted to human behavior. These models are used because they can be computed by hand, and formulas can be written down. The most advanced Macroeconomic model, currently in use around the globe for monetary policy, is DSGE: Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium model. It has only ONE agent.
Counter-Strategy: Agent Based Models These are revolutionary – computers can now compute heterogenous models with thousands of agents. This was impossible earlier.
