The Use of Enhancement Learning Sheet in Improving the Academic Performance of Students in Dimasalang National High School

Introduction In this time of pandemic, the Department of Education never hesitate to continue providing quality education to the Filipino learners. Amidst the circular motions and executive orders being implemented in our country to limit the people in a public place it does not stop the leaders to think for an intervention that aiming to maintain the quality education- and that is a distance learning modality. Distance learning modality includes (1) Modular Distance Learning (MDL), (2) Online Distance Learning (ODL) and (3) TV/Radio-Based Instruction. For the school year 2020-2021, the learners will undergo blended modality wherein that can choose a combination of two (2) distance learning modalities at their own convenience. Indeed, distance learning modality is a challenging task to the teachers because students notwithstanding the dedication of the teachers to teach and delivered the lesson in front of the class still the number of the students with poor academic performance increases. The main purpose of the study is to provide an intervention to the learners to improve academic performance in a modular distance learning modality.

Methodology a. Research Method The study uses quantitative data collection through true-experimental research design which was utilizes controlled and uncontrolled group to gather and quantify the data. b. Research Respondents The study utilizes the 447 students of Dimasalang National High School . The 447 students were composed of Junior High School and Senior High School students or twelve (12) sections. There were two (2) sections per grade level. c. Sampling Procedure For school year 2020-2021, the 447 respondents were randomly selected from the twelve sections of Junior High School and Senior High School. There were two (2) sections per grade level and was grouped as controlled and uncontrolled group. d. Research Instrument The Enhancement Learning Sheet was produced by the subject teachers contains purely teachers’ further explanation or the summary on the lessons with a minimum of 100 words.

Methodology e. Validity of the Instrument The Enhancement Learning Sheet is the subject teacher-made instrument was validated by the department head and the school head. f. Reliability of the Instrument The researcher evaluated the effectiveness of Enhancement Learning Sheet in improving the academic performance of the students through summarized data from the subject teachers. Pre-Test (preliminary test) was given and recorded to both group as an initial assessment of the learners. The controlled group was aided by the Enhancement Learning Sheet composed by the teacher to further comprehend and understand the lesson well while the uncontrolled group has not. After the grading period, it was noticed that the students under the controlled group got a higher grades than those in the uncontrolled group.

Methodology g. Distribution and Retrieval of the Instrument The distribution of the Enhancement Learning Sheet is scheduled before the conduct of the summative test. The retrieval of the Enhancement Learning Sheet after the conduct of the summative test. The parents of the students will return or submit the summative test questions together with the Enhancement Learning Sheet to the class adviser. h. Ethical Consideration The researcher will firstly ask permission to the respondents before conducting the research and in this time as its pandemic. The researcher will not force the respondents to read or study the enhancement learning sheet. Protocols will be followed in conducting research especially that large group gathering was discouraged at this moment due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19. i . Statistical Treatment of the Data The study uses quantitative data collection through experimental research design. The mean and standard deviation of the service quality dimension were calculated, in addition to the mean and standard deviation values for controlled and uncontrolled group. Quantitative information was collected for the purpose of this study, and descriptive statistics were used in its evaluation.

Results and Discussions Amidst this pandemic with the new learning modalities study aims to improve the academic performance of the students of Dimasalang National High School SY 2020-2021 through Enhancement Learning Sheet. The study aims to seek answers to the following questions: 1. How can the use of Enhancement Learning Sheet help the students improve their academic performance? 2. How effective is Enhancement Learning Sheet in improving students’ academic performance?

Table 1.1 shows the recorded mean score of the uncontrolled group of students. The recorded mean scores of the uncontrolled group results reveal that the students gained no mastery in particular subjects with their won paced. Preliminary test (Pre-Test) was given to assess student’s prior knowledge about the lesson, at the end of the lesson the students were tested using the Post-test which recorded below the mean scores of Pre-tests. Table 2.1 reveals that the scores of controlled group in Post-Test is higher than the Pre-test. Looking into the table 1.2 and 2.2 implies the difference of standard deviation of the Pre-Test and Post-test scores the uncontrolled group of Grade 10 students got 1.94 while the controlled students got 6.52 which uses the Enhancement Learning Sheet to gain mastery in the lesson. Take note that the higher the standard deviation the effectiveness of the usage of Enhancement Learning Sheet is. However, Grade 9 uncontrolled group gives -1.21 standard deviation while the controlled group gives -1.36 resulting to effectiveness of the usage of Enhancement Learning Sheet.

Overall, Enhancement Learning Sheet aided the students to gain mastery of the lesson with their own paced. The recorded results of the controlled group from Grade 10 , 12, 11 8 and 7 which was 6.52, 38, 0.05 and 0.01 respectively concludes the effectiveness of Enhancement Learning Sheet.
