Journal Indexing :
A journal index also called
bibliographic index
or
bibliographic database
Is a list of journals organized by
discipline, subject, region or other factors.
31-07-2024 2

Journal Indexing :
Journal indexes can be used to search for studies
and data on certain topics.
Indexed journals are of higher scientific quality than
non-indexed journals.
31-07-2024 3

Journal indexes are created by different
organizations
such as:
a) Public bodies.For example,PubMedis
maintained by the U S National Library
of Medicine.
PubMed is the largest index for
biomedical publications.
31-07-2024 4

Journal indexes are created by different organizations
b) Analytic companies. For example: theWeb of Science
Core collection is maintained by
ClarivateAnalytics.
c) Publishers.For example,Scopusis owned by
Elsevierand maintained by theScopus Content
Selection and Advisory Board.
Scopus includes journals in all disciplines,
but the majority are science and technology
journals.

Some indexes are open to the public, while others require a
subscription.
We start searching for research papers in free search engines
such as
Google Scholar, or
free journal indexes, such as
theWeb of Science Master Journal List.
Journals in subscription-based indexes are generally
considered high-quality journals.

How does journal indexing work?
All journals are checked for certain criteria before being
added to an index.
Each index has its own set of rules, but basic publishing
standardsinclude the following:
1) An International Standard Serial Number (ISSN).
ISSNs are unique to each journal and indicate that the
journal publishes issues on a recurring basis.
2) An established publishing schedule.
31-07-2024 7

3) Digital Object Identifier : DOIs are unique
letter/number codes assigned to digital objects.
The benefit of a DOI is that it will never change,
unlike a website link.
4) Copyright requirements.
A copyright policy helps to protect your work and
for the use or sharing of your work.
•Other requirements can include conflict of interest
statements, ethical approval statements, an editorial board
listed on the website, and published peer review policies.

Why is journal indexing important?
1.Publishing the research in an indexed journal increases the
credibility and visibility of the work.
2.Indexed journals are generally consideredto be of higher
scientific qualitythan non-indexed journals.
3.Most of the Institutions are requiring publication in an
indexed journal as a requirement for
graduation, promotion, or grant funding.
31-07-2024 9

Why is journal indexing important?
4. As an author, it is important to ensure that your research is
seen by as many eyes as possible.
Index databases are often the first places scholars and the
public will search for specific information.

Open access Journals
These journals are completely open access,
meaning they do not offer a traditional
subscription service.
Open access journals have many benefits, such as:
High visibility.
Publication speed.

Major journal indexing services :
•Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) Master Journal List
•Scopus
•Engineering Index
•Web of Science (now published by ClarivateAnalytics,
formerly by ISI and Thomson Reuters)
•Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
•QualisHumanities and Social Sciences
•Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) Master Journal List
•Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) Master Journal List

Impact factor :
First introduced by Eugene Garfield, the founder of the Institute
for Scientific Information.
It is a the average number of citations to articles published in
journals,
books,
thesis,
project reports,
conference/seminar proceedings,
and any other approved documents.
31-07-2024 13

Impact factor :
Is used to evaluatethe relative importance of a journal within
its field.
It measure the frequencywith which the “article” in a journal
has been citedin a particular time period.
According to Eugene Garfield “Impact Factorsimply reflects
the ability of
the journals and editors to attract the best paper available.”
31-07-2024 14

Impact factor :
Impact factor can be calculatedafter completing the minimum
of 3 years of publication.
That’s why new journals do not have Impact factor.
The Impact Factor applies only to journals,
not to
individual articlesor individual scientists.
31-07-2024 15

Impact factor :
IF of a journal is the average number of citations received per
article publishedin that journal during the 2 preceding years.
Example :
If a journal has an IF of 3in 2008, then its papers published in
2006 and 2007 received 3 citations each on average in 2008.
The 2008 IFs are actually published in 2009.
31-07-2024 16

Impact factor :
IF of any journal may be calculated by the formula:
2008 impact factor =A/B
Where
Ais the number of times articles publishedin 2006and 2007
were cited, by indexed journals during 2008.
Bis the total number of articles and reviews published by that
journalin 2006 and 2007.

Plagiarism

Which one is
Original ??
You can find extreme similarity between the two logos and
product.

Timberlandstarted in Bostonas early as 1918.
It started getting widely popular around USA for its waterproof boots
around 70's.
This was the time they recognized the brand Timberland and expanded
rapidly across the Globe.
India wasn't as big retail market as it is now in the 90's.
So Timberland didn't bothered to look at India as a potential market.

Woodlandwas originally founded in Quebec in the 1950s.
After being purchased by footwear manufacturer and
distributor, Aero Group, the Woodland brand was brought into
the Indian market in 1992.
And it quickly boomed due to the long-lasting durability and
ultra-comfortable fit of its boots. Annual turn over is about
Rs.1200 crores.
Woodland used the iconic “tree logo” from Timberland .
31-07-2024 21

Timberlandentered India in 2010and they were very confident
due to their global appearance.
But
Woodland was already established in India.
People thought that Timberland copied Woodland.
Timberland even sued Aero Shoes for copyright issues.
Things didn't went well for Timberlandand it leftIndia in 2015.

Plagiarism :
Is the representation of another author's language, thoughts,
ideas, or expressions as one's own original work.
The Latin word "plagiarius"-means-"kidnapper" to denote
stealing someone else's creative work.

This means that, on average, its papers published in
2015 and 2016 received roughly 42 citations each in
2017.
Note that 2017 impact factors are reported in 2018
Nature Journal is having an impact factor of 41.577 in 2017
