THE IMPACTS OF MOBILE PHONE USAGE DURING CLASS HOURS TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS IN PAWICAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

OBJECTIVES : • To investigate and analyze the relationships between mobile phone usage during class hours and the academic performance of Grade 12 students. • To examine various factors such as the type and frequency of mobile phone usage, its impact of learning the overall academic outcomes. • To provide valuable insights and recommendations for educators, Students, and policy makers to develop strategies that optimize Learning environments while considering the role of mobile phone Usage in the educational process.

CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction: Have you ever noticed how technology influenced our lives? As we can see in today’s generation, technology is the one who creates every step in our journey. Many people relies on things that technology can give. Most famous technology that is usually used by many people is the mobile phone.

There are many things that we can do through this gadget like playing online/offline games, socialize with friends in cyberspace, contact our loved ones, earn money through it, and helps in making a research for academic purposes with the use of internet.

Mobile phones serves as multifunctional tools that accompany students throughout their daily lives, including within the classroom environment. While mobile phones offer a numerous benefits, their presence during class hours has sparkled debates regarding their impact on students’ academic performance.

It revolutionized the way students engage with information, providing instant access to a wealth of resources and facilitating communication. However, their presence during class can be a double-edged sword, as it introduces potential distractions that may hinder students’ focus and concentration. Notifications, social media alerts, and the temptation to browse the internet can divert students’ attention away from the lesson at hand, impacting their ability to absorb and retain information effectively.

Moreover, the habitual use of mobile phones during class hours may contribute to a decline in academic performance. Research suggests that excessive screen time, particularly during instructional periods, can lead to decreased cognitive functioning and poorer academic outcomes. Furthermore, the constant availability of mobile phones may foster a culture of dependency, where students rely on instant gratification rather than investing time and effort in active learning processes.

On the contrary, proponents argue that mobile phones can serve as valuable educational tools when utilized appropriately. Educational apps, online resources, and interactive learning platforms harness the potential of mobile technology to enhance students’ learning experiences and promote engagement. However, the challenge lies in striking a balance between leveraging the benefits of mobile phones for educations purposes while mitigating their potential drawbacks on academic performance.

To address this concerns comprehensively, this study will investigate the impact of mobile phone usage during class hours on students’ academic performance through empirical research analysis. By examining factors such as frequently of mobile phone usage, types of activities engaged in, and corresponding academic outcomes, this study aims to provide insights into the complex interplay between mobile phone technology and academic achievement.

In conclusion, understanding the impact of mobile phone usage during class hours is essential for educators, policymakers, and students alike. By recognizing the potential implications of mobile phone usage on academic performance, stakeholders can implement strategies to foster a conducive learning environment that maximizes the benefits of technology while minimizing its distractions. Through empirical research and informed interventions, we can strive towards optimizing students’ academic success in an increasingly digital age.

The impacts of using mobile phones during class hours on the academic performance of Grade 12 students is rooted in the increasing prevalence of mobile technology in educational settings and the need to understand its implications for learning outcomes. With the widespread availability and use of mobile phones among adolescents, including grade 12 students, educators and researchers have been prompted to investigate the potential effects of this technological presence on students’ academic performance. Background of the study

The impetus for this study is also driven by the concerns about the impacts of digital distractions and multitasking behaviors on students’ ability to engage with course content, participate in classroom activities, and ultimately achieve academic success. Grade 12 represents a critical stage on students’ academic journey, as they prepare for graduation and transition to higher education or the workforce. As such, understanding specific effects of mobile phone use during class hours on the academic performance of grade 12 holds a particular significance for their educational development and future prospects.

Additionally, the existing body of research on mobile phone use in educational contexts has largely focus on college university students, leaving a gap in understanding the implications for high school students, particularly those in their final year of secondary education. By addressing their gap, the study aims to contribute valuable insights that can inform educational policies, instructional practices and support systems tailored to the unique needs of challenge grade 12 students.

In conclusion, the findings of this study shed light on the significant impact of mobile phone usage during class hours on the academic performance of the students.

Statement of the Problem The impacts of mobile phone usage during class hours raised the concerns on the academic performance of the students. This study aims to investigate the correlation between mobile phone usage during class hours and students’ academic performance, examine the factors such as distraction, engagement, and learning outcomes. By understanding its relationship, the educators, policymakers, and researchers can implement strategies to mitigate any negative effects and promote a positive learning environment.

Scope and Delimitation The study focused on the relationship between the respondents’ perception on the impacts of using mobile phone during class hour. Among the different description that may describe to the respondents the present study only including the positive and negative effects of using mobile phone to the academic performance of every student. The respondents of the study included the students of Senior High School Grade 12 in the section Fitzgerald, Dickinson, and Shakespeare.

The res earchers delimits the study for the grade 12 who does not have mobile phones. To come up with the total number.

The significance of the study is to determine the impacts of using mobile phones during class hours to the academic performance of grade 12 students. The researchers’ aim that this study will be beneficial and established the following will either directly or indirectly benefit from the evaluated results. Significance of the Study

Students – this will help Pawican National High School by getting benefits if the problem was addressed. Teachers – this will help them to have an awareness about the performance of their students that is caused by using mobile phones during class hours, so that the teacher can find a solution for the said issue. Researchers – the results of the study may serve a guide for the future researchers which they gain knowledge and idea in terms of creating a research paper. School – it will serve as an awareness to our Alma Mater.

CHAPTER 2: THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE This study delves into the significant and thought -provoking topic of how mobile phone usage affects the academic performance of Grade 12 students. The research methodology appears to be will planned and executed ,incorporating a diverse sample size and a combination of a quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The authors have made a genuine effort to explore the potential positive and negative influences of mobile phone on students academic achievements, which is a crucial concern in today’s technologically advanced world.

The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the complex relationship between mobile phone usage and academic performance. The authors have presented a comprehensive analysis of the various factors that contribute to this relationship, such as the type of mobile phone usage (e.g.. educational apps, social media, gaming), the duration of usage, the impact on different aspect of academic performance (e.g.., grades, study habits, time management). This detailed examination allows for a more nuanced understanding of the issue and helps to dispel generalizations often associated with mobile phone usage.  

One of the most compelling aspects of this study is the inclusion of both quantitative and qualitative data. The well-structured methodology, comprehensive analysis, and inclusion of both quantitative and qualitative data make it a worthwhile read for educators, parents, policymakers, and research ers interested in understanding the complex relationship between mobile phones and academic success.

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES There have been several studies conducted on the impact of mobile phone usage during class hours in educational settings. A study by Kuznekoff and Titsworth (2013) found that students who used their phones during class were more likely to be distracted and have lower academic performance compared to those who did not use their phones. Similarly, a study by Duncan et al. (2017) found that frequent mobile phone use during class was associated with lower grades and reduced engagement in class activities.

On the other hand, a study by Junco and Cotten (2012) found that students who used their phones for educational purposes, such as accessing class materials or research, had higher grades and reported feeling more engaged in their classes. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK The conceptual framework of the study shows the relationship of the input, process and the output of the topic research.

  INPUT 1.What is the profile of the students in terms of age and gender. 2.What are the impacts of using mobile phone during class hours. 3.How the issue can give positive and negative impacts to the academic performance of grade 12 students.   OUTPUT The impacts of using mobile phone during class hours to the academic performance of grade 12 students of Pawican National High School. PROCESS SURVEY QUESTIONAIRE DATA ANALYSIS DATA INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS

Hypothesis of the Study There is a significant negative correlation between the frequency of mobile phone usage during class hours and the academic performance of grade 12 students, as measured by their overall grade point average. The hypothesis of the study in the research paper titled ’’The impacts of using gadgets during class discussions of Grade 12 students ’’could be ;’’Examining the potential effects of students utilizing electronic devices during classroom discussions on their participation , engagement, and overall academic performance in Grade 12’’. e.

Assumption of the Study Mobile phone usage during class hours directly affects the academic performance of the students in their final year of high school. This assumption might be based on the belief that students who use their mobile phones during class time might be less focused on the lessons, leading to a decrease in their overall academic performance.  

The assumption of the study in the research titled ’’Impacts of using gadgets during class discussions on the academic performance of Grade 12 students ‘could be; ’’Students ’ usage of electronic devices during classroom discussions may influence their engagement , participation , and ultimately , their academic performance in Grade 12’’.   1.Investigating the prevalence and types of gadgets used by Grade 12 students during class discussions. 2.Examining the potential effects of gadget usage on students’ participation and engagement in classroom discussions. 3.Assessing the correlation between gadget usage during class discussions and students’ overall academic performance in Grade12 .

4. Analyzing whether gadget usage during discussions has any impact on critical thinking, problem solving, and collaborative learning skills among Grade 12 students. 5. Identifying any potential advantages or disadvantages of gadget usage during class discussions on students’ academic performance and learning experience . 6. Providing recommendations for educators and educational institutions to optimize the use of technology in fostering a productive and engaging classroom environment.    

DEFINITION OF TERMS INCREASED - An instance of growing or making greater. DECREASED - Make or become smaller or fewer in size, amount , intensity, or degree. MOBILE PHONE - Portable or telephone that can make and receive calls over a radio frequency link while the user is moving within a telephone service area , as opposed to a fixed location phone. IMPLEMENTATION - The process of putting a decision or plan into effect. ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE - The measurement of academic achievement across various academic subjects.

CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Overall, this research design aims to investigate the impacts of using gadgets during class discussions on students' learning outcomes and classroom dynamics, providing insights into the potential benefits and drawbacks of technology in the classroom.   The respondents of this study is the one who are involve in the said issue, which are the three section of grade 12 student's of Pawican National High School.
