Effect of COVID-19 Modular Distance Learning on Grade 11 Students’ General Mathematics Performance at Calintaan National High School Gilbert A. Mangusin, Jr. Master of Arts in Education Major in Administration and Supervision

What is the problem? (Provide facts with citations) The problem is the effect of modular distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic on Grade 11 students' performance in General M athematics at Calintaan N ational H igh S chool. Modular distance learning, which involves students working independently with printed materials and limited direct teacher interaction, became a primary method of instruction during the pandemic (Nabors et al., 2020). There is concern that this mode of learning may have negatively impacted students' understanding and performance in subjects that require a strong grasp of concepts and problem-solving skills, such as G eneral M athematics (Bollinger & Martindale, 2004).

Why is it the problem? (Provide facts with citations) Modular distance learning can present challenges that may affect academic performance. Studies have shown that students may experience difficulties with engagement and comprehension due to reduced interaction with teachers and peers, and limited feedback (Bernard et al., 2004; Garrison et al., 2010). Additionally, the transition to distance learning during the pandemic was abrupt and lacked preparation for both students and teachers, which may have exacerbated these issues (Adams, 2021). This is particularly concerning in subjects like General Mathematics, which require continuous practice and conceptual understanding (Hattie & Timperley, 2007).

How can it be solved? (Provide 3 solutions) 5 Enhance Teacher Support and Feedback: Implement regular online check-ins and provide timely feedback to help students stay on track and address difficulties. Train teachers in effective online teaching strategies and communication to improve engagement and support. Improve Learning Materials: Revise and enhance modular materials to include interactive elements like online quizzes and video tutorials. Ensure that materials are clear, comprehensive, and aligned with the curriculum to better support learning. Increase Student Engagement: Create online discussion forums or study groups to encourage collaboration and peer support. Offer additional online resources or supplementary classes to address common areas of difficulty and reinforce learning.

What are the possible results of the three possible solutions? Enhanced Teacher Support and Feedback: Positive Result: Improved student understanding and performance due to increased support and timely feedback. Possible Negative Result: Increased workload for teachers, which may require additional resources and professional development. Improved Learning Materials: Positive Result: Higher student engagement and better comprehension through interactive and well-organized materials. Possible Negative Result: Additional time and effort needed for the development and updating of learning materials. Increased Student Engagement: Positive Result: Greater peer interaction and collaborative learning, leading to improved problem-solving skills and performance. Possible Negative Result: Technological issues or unequal access to online resources could limit the effectiveness of these strategies. 6

What is the purpose of the study? 7 The purpose of the study is to evaluate how modular distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Grade 11 students' performance in General Mathematics at Calintaan National High School. The study aims to understand the impact of this learning method on student outcomes and to identify potential strategies for improving educational practices in similar contexts.

Who will be the participants of the study? The participants will be Grade 11 students enrolled in General Mathematics at Calintaan National High School who experienced modular distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the study may include their teachers and possibly parents to gain a comprehensive view of the effects and challenges associated with this learning method. 8

What would be your research design? Quantitative Component: Collect and analyze academic performance data (e.g., grades, test scores) before, during, and after the implementation of modular distance learning to assess its impact on General Mathematics performance. Qualitative Component: Conduct surveys, interviews, or focus groups with students, teachers, and parents to gather insights into their experiences, challenges, and perceptions regarding modular distance learning. Combining these methods will provide a well-rounded understanding of both the measurable outcomes and personal experiences related to modular distance learning in General Mathematics. 9
