“Scientific Literature” by K. Subramanyam (p.394) originated from  Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science  (New York, 1979, Allan Kent and Harold Lancour , eds.)

ACCEPTABLE SOURCES FOR LITERATURE REVIEWS Following are a few acceptable sources for literature reviews, listed in order from what will be considered most acceptable to less acceptable sources for your literature review assignments : Peer reviewed journal articles. Edited academic books. Articles in professional journals. Statistical data from government websites. Website material from professional associations

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE The Research Objective represents the relevance of the research to be conducted. I investigate… Because I want to know… (Research Question) in order to acquire insight into the boundary conditions of this model. (Objective)

LITERATURE ‘… a collection of all the scholarly writings on a topic.’ LITERATURE REVIEW ‘… a systematic method for identifying, evaluating and interpreting the work produced by researchers, scholars and practitioners.’

THE PURPOSE OF A LITERATURE REVIEW IS TO: Place each work in the context of its contribution to understanding the research problem being studied . Describe the relationship of each work to the others under consideration. Identify new ways to interpret prior research. Reveal any gaps that exist in the literature. Resolve conflicts amongst seemingly contradictory previous studies. Identify areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication of effort. Point the way in fulfilling a need for additional research. Locate your own research within the context of existing literature [very important ].

Integrative Systematic Historical This form examines literature selectively in order to support or refute an argument, deeply imbedded assumption , or philosophical problem already established in the literature. The purpose is to develop a body of literature that establishes a contrarian viewpoint. Considered a form of research that reviews, critiques, and synthesizes representative literature on a topic in an integrated way such that new frameworks and perspectives on the topic are generated. The body of literature includes all studies that address related or identical hypotheses or research problems. The goal is to deliberately document, critically evaluate, and summarize scientifically all of the research about a clearly defined research problem. Historical literature reviews focus on examining research throughout a period of time, often starting with the first time an issue, concept, theory, phenomena emerged in the literature, then tracing its evolution within the scholarship of a discipline. 1 2 3 4 Argumentative

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine they lay down for the night and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend. "Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see." Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars." Sherlock: "What does that tell you?"

Watson pondered for a minute. " Astronomically , it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically , I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically , I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically , I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically , I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Sherlock, What does it tell you ?"

Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. "Watson, you idiot. Someone has stolen our tent."

In a Nursery School Canteen, there’s a basket of apples with a notice written over it : ‘ Do not take more than one, God is watching ’

On the other counter there’s a box of chocolates, A small child went & wrote on it: “ Take as many as you want, God is busy watching the apples”.

KNOWLEDGE is knowing tomato is a fruit WISDOM is not putting it in a fruit salad

Evaluating Information Applying the CRAAP Test

C urrency : The timeliness of the information . • When was the information published or posted ? • Has the information been revised or updated ? • Does your topic require current information, or will older sources work as well ? • Are the links functional?

R elevance: The importance of the information for your needs. •Does the information relate to your topic or answer your question ? • Who is the intended audience ? • Is the information at an appropriate level (i.e. not too elementary or advanced for your needs )? • Have you looked at a variety of sources before determining this is one you will use ? • Would you be comfortable citing this source in your research paper?

A uthority : The source of the information . • Who is the author/publisher/source/sponsor? • What are the author's credentials or organizational affiliations ? • Is the author qualified to write on the topic ? • Is there contact information, such as a publisher or email address? • Does the URL reveal anything about the author or source? examples: .com . edu . gov .org .net

A ccuracy : The reliability, truthfulness and correctness of the content. •Where does the information come from ? • Is the information supported by evidence ? • Has the information been reviewed or refereed ? • Can you verify any of the information in another source or from personal knowledge ? • Does the language or tone seem unbiased and free of emotion ? • Are there spelling, grammar or typographical errors?

P urpose : The reason the information exists. •What is the purpose of the information?
