Introduction Because the Philippines is abundant in natural resources, Filipino artists creatively turn what’s on hand, everything from indigenous fibers to discarded plastic straws, bottles, and old newspapers into artworks. By repurposing these everyday or recyclable items, they both serve community needs and convey ideas, emotions, and ways of life, continuing the nation’s long tradition of transforming local materials into meaningful art.

In this lesson we will discuss the various traditional techniques, their description and applications to contemporary arts.

Objectives :

What is technique? An art is always created with a technique. It is the way that the artist uses to express an idea or feeling through art.

1. Puni ( Bulacan ) - This is a popular Bulakenyo's way of decorating using leaf fronds folding which has a Malayan origin. Straw Folding: Wax-coated paper straws are rolled and shaped into decorative forms. Origami: Japanese paper folding art, now widely practiced in modern designs. 2. Singkaban ( Malolos ): Bamboo arches used as festive town or city welcome signs. Bamboo Art: Involves cutting, carving, dyeing, and weaving bamboo for artistic and functional pieces. A.
