Most Essential Learning Competencies: Discuss responsible use of media and information Learning Objectives The learners: give the advantages and disadvantages of media enumerate ways on how to be a responsible user of media

Social Media/Media Literacy: Responsible Use   More than 70% of youth use social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, X, YouTube, and Tumblr, and the list of possible platforms is growing. Most young people report using more than one social media platform. Social media, and internet use in general, is a common part of most young people's daily lives. Assisting them in the responsible use and navigation of various platforms is important for any supportive adults in their lives.

Social Media/Media Literacy: Responsible Use   Media has evolved over time to make people's lives easier. Communication is one of the most effective uses of media. The media plays an important role in sharing information around the world. People are kept informed and up to date on important events and happenings thanks to the media. On the other hand, media has both advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of Media and Information 1. Media provides a way for information and news to be widely shared. A great example to consider is COVID-19. It would have been much more difficult to spread the word that we are facing a deadly virus if there had been no media (newspapers, radio, television, blogs, and social media).   2. It exposes us to culture, art, and ways of life which we would otherwise never have known.   3. Media provides a platform for businesses to gain market shares, thereby keeping the economy going.

Disadvantages of Media People's opinion and thoughts can be limited in media. Although you can share your thoughts freely, you can still experience judgements and harsh comments on your opinion 2. Media can be used for cyberbullying and trafficking 3. Media may provide fake news and unreliable information

How to be a Responsible User of Media and Information? Many media users behave unethically, thus the media gives rise to a need for good judgment and discernment, which are not attributes possessed by everybody. Here are some tips on how to be a responsible user of media and information: 1. Do not post anything containing fake news. We must check the source of any news before we post or share it. We

2. Refrain from bullying acts. Bullying is not good whether it is verbal, emotional, catcalling and cyberbullying. 3. Know your Netiquette (Network Etiquette). Be knowledgeable on the dos and don’ts of using media and information. 4. Do not use media as source of pirated works. Media gives us lots of information about things we need to learn but do not own someone else’s work by copying it. We use the information on the internet as references but don’t ever plagiarize.

Act as you would in real life. Always follow the Golden Rule, whether you are in a cyber space or in the real world. 6. Create posts that are both positive and factual and do not show falsity. As cliché as it may sound but we must "Think before we click." Most of us are not media literate. Media is created to inform and educate us, but with our irresponsible actions it is becoming toxic to us. As a user, we must be mindful on what we share and post on different forms of media. We must remember that a simple click can affect a large amount of people.
