R.K. LAXMAN Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Laxman Born in Mysore on 24 th October in 1921 and died on Jan 26,2015 An Indian cartoonist , illustrator, and humorist. Humorist: a person who acts, speaks, or writes in a humorous way, A person with a good sense of humor, an active sense of humor An illustrator is an artist who specializes in enhancing writing by providing a visual representation that corresponds to the content of the associated text or idea. Best known for his creation The Common Man.
CAREER After high school, Laxman applied to the J. J. School of Art, Bombay but got rejected. He finally graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Mysore. Meantime, he contributed cartoons to Swarajya and an animated film.
While a college student, he illustrated his elder brother R. K. Narayan's stories in The Hindu . His first full-time job was as a political cartoonist for the The Free Press Journal in Mumbai.
His creations also include the sketches drawn for the television adaptation of Malgudi Days which was written by his elder brother, R . K. Narayan .
WORK RK Laxman created a popular mascot for the Asian Paints group called Gattu in 1954 . He also wrote a few novels, the first one of which was titled The hotel riviera
RK Laxman created his common man in 1957 which represented the India's ordinary people, their happiness and grief, how their life got messed up in bureaucracy. His cartoons capture serious issues in a light hearted manner.
Who said it? You said it. Who is ‘you’? The common man. The aam aadmi ? Well, you said it. Who cares? You said it. The truth is that the common man is forever jabbering the truth. Someone hears this blabbering once in a while and some good gets done. Most of the time though this jabbering is lost unrecorded and unremembered. And then came along R K Laxman who could somehow hear this nervous, almost repentant waffling of the man on the street and he decided to give it life. He’s been silent all these 50 years. He simply listens.

He perfectly captured the thought of life and politics in India, not only through his cartoons, but on television too, through the show RK Laxman Ki Duniya . Based on the books and works of RK Laxman, the series attempted to capture incidents involving happenings in the life of the common man.
DEATH Laxman died at the age of 93 in Pune on 26 January 2015, due to urinary tract infection and chest-related problems that ultimately led to multi-organ failure. He had reportedly suffered multiple strokes since 2010.
