Have your school days taught you something? If yes. What is it? Close your eyes and think of your school days?

What did you observe? Are you all animals? Social Animals…….. To live in society we need to learn certain social expectations, culture and that is what is called as Socialization.

Let us discuss on…….. What is socialization? Why socialization is essential? Who all contribute in socialization? What is the role of education in socialization?

Socialization Human infants are born without any culture.  They must be transformed by their parents, teachers, and others into cultural and socially adept animals.  The general process of acquiring culture is referred to as socialization. During socialization, we learn the language of the culture we are born into as well as the roles we are to play in life.  For instance, girls learn how to be daughters, sisters, friends, wives, and mothers.

Meaning of Socialization Socialization is a lifelong process during which we learn about social expectations and how to interact with other people. Nearly all of the behaviour that we consider to be 'human nature' is actually learned through socialization. It is during socialization that we learn how to walk, talk, and feed ourselves, about behavioural norms that help us fit in to our society, and so much more.

Agencies of Socialization Family Schools Peers Mass Media

Family Family is usually considered to be the most important agent of socialization. As infants, we are completely dependent on others to survive. Our parents, or those who play the parent role, are responsible for teaching us to function and care for ourselves. They, along with the rest of our family, also teach us about close relationships, group life, and how to share resources.

Schools The next important agent of childhood socialization is the school. Purpose of school is to transfer subject knowledge and teach life skills. Students don't just learn from the academic curriculum prepared by teachers and school administrators. In school, we also learn social skills through our interactions with teachers, staff, and other students. For example, we learn the importance of obeying authority and that, to be successful, we must learn to be quiet, to wait, and sometimes to act interested even when we're not. Anand , like other children, might even learn things from his teacher that she did not intend to teach. For instance, he might learn that it's best to yell out an answer instead of raising his hand. When he does so, he gets rare attention from the teacher and is hardly ever punished.

Peers Peers also give us a chance to develop many of the social skills we need as adults. For instance, Anand will certainly experience moments when his friends' behaviour and/or values contradict the norms and values he obtained from his family. He has to learn to decide which norms and values to keep, reject, or use and follow in certain situations.

Mass Media Television, internet, radio, movie, books, magazine also plays a very vital role in socialization of child.

Role of Education in socialization of Child Educational systems socialize students to become members of society, to play meaningful roles in the complex network of independent positions.  Education helps in shaping values and attitudes to the needs of the contemporary society. Education widens the mental horizons of pupils and teaches them new ways of looking at themselves and their society.

Role of Education in socialization of Child Education offers young people opportunities for intellectual, emotional and social growth. Thus education can be influential in promoting new values and stimulating adaptation of changing conditions. Informally and especially through social clubs, the school enables the child to learn a number of other social roles and skills which are also important for his/ her overall development as a member of society. For example, Education teaches the laws, traditions and norms of the community, the rights that individuals will enjoy and the responsibilities that they will undertake.

Role of Education in socialization of Child Education teaches how one is to behave toward his/ her play- mates and adults. Education teaches how to share things and ideas. Education teaches how to compete responsibly Education leads toward tolerant and humanitarian attitudes. For example, college graduates are expected to be more tolerant than (high school graduates in their attitudes toward ethnic and social groups.
