DEFINITION A role play can be defined as “ A dramatic approach in which individual students assume the roles of others” “An educational technique in which people spontaneously act out problems of human relations and analyze the enactment with the help of other role players and observers” “Role playing is the spontaneous acting out of the roles in the context human relations situations ”

Broad methods……. Sociodrama Psychodrama

Sociodrama : It deals with interaction of people with other individuals or groups Eg: mother, nurse and leader Psychodrama : Practiced in group setting mainly concerned with the unique needs and problems of a particular individual Need guidance of trained therapist

Aims of role playing To develop interpersonal skills and communication skills To gain insight into personal attitudes , values and behaviors To convey information To understand about social psychological issues To understand feelings and opinions of others To enable even the shy and introverts to express their views To provide awareness about social and psychological issues

Principles of role play Role playing is based on the philosophy that meanings are in people, not in words or symbols . Should be based on r ealistic and life related problems and situations creating a teaching situation which can lead to the change of self concepts requires a distinct organizational pattern Role play is Flexible Should be stimulant to thinking and should not be escape from discipline of learning

Principles of role play There is no single method of selecting character the group may do the assigning Role should be rehearsed to produce an effective out come Analysis and evaluation are essential to attain the maximum learning benefits It should be brief

Disadvantages Role playing is a mean, not and end It requires expert guidance and leadership Sometimes participation may feel threatened Used as an education technique, not therapeutic one Time consuming Limited only by teachers ingenuity and realistic use Limited to small groups Can be embarrassing for students lacks spontaneity Needs adequate knowledge and skills Over exaggeration of roles

Points to remember There should be never be one answer to a situation presented The should be brief Enough time should be allowed for discussion Proper evaluation by teachers and the participants
