Root Words Root Word Definition Example am, amor love, liking am iable, am orous aud hear, listen aud io, aud itorium bio life bio graphy, bio logy cycl wheel, circular bi cycle geo earth geo graphy, geo logy A root word is a base word. You can change the meaning of it by adding suffixes and/or prefixes.
am, amor love, liking My best friend is am iable . The mama penguin and her baby are amor ous .
aud hear, listen The band played music in the aud itorium . The aud ience clapped at the end of the performance.
bio life Bio logy is the study of life. Your bio graphy is the story of your life.
cycl wheel, circular I want to ride my bi cycl e . It is important to re cycl e paper, plastic, and cans. Another name for a tornado is cycl one.
geo earth My favorite subject is geo graphy . Geo logy is the study of the earth.

pre- before Make a pre diction about the story before you read it. I love watching movie pre views .
un- not Sad songs make me feel un happy . The old sofa is very un comfortable .
re- again, back It’s important to re view before a test. Let’s watch a re play of the homerun!
non- not We would like to sit in the non- smoking section. Do you like to read non fiction?
sub- under A sub marine travels under the water. I ride the sub way into the city.

Suffixes Suffix Definition Example -s, - es plural, more than one book s , sandwich es -ed past tense (regular verbs) call ed , learn ed -less without care less , hope less - er one who, a person who bak er , teach er - ful full of hope ful , care ful Suffixes come at the end of a word. Sometimes a suffix will tell you what part of speech or tense a word is.
-s, - es plural, more than one The girl has many doll s . How many sandwich es did you eat?
-ed past tense (regular verbs) Jose call ed his mom. We play ed soccer at recess.
-less without Alma spent all of her money. She was penni less . Don’t be care less with other people’s things.
- er a person who does something The bak er bakes cakes. A teach er is someone who teaches.
- ful full of Thank you for the flowers. That was very thought ful of you. A ballerina is a grace ful dancer. Hope ful ly , there is gold at the end of the rainbow!
