Lesson 4 Writing a Sentence Outline

Distinguish between and among techniques in selecting and organizing information (sentence outline) (EN11/12RWS-IIIa-2.4). 1

define what a sentence outline is; write a sentence outline following the suggested steps; and write an essay following the generated sentence outline.

How can a sentence outline enhance our writing?

On a short bond paper, w rite your answers to the following questions. Use the Courier font, size 12, and single-spaced. Did you ever start writing a paper without an outline to refer to? How did you feel about writing a paper without an outline? Did you get stressed or frustrated, or were you okay with it? Did you know what the main idea is that needed to be supported throughout?

Did you have enough details to support what you wanted to say? How many times have you read the essay during the revision stage and realized that some points lack certain details or have too much information?

Review What is a topic outline? How does it look like? When should one best use it?

Sentence Outline It is a more specific outline technique because it already states the main idea and the supporting ideas in full sentences.

Steps in Writing a Sentence Outline Write your thesis statement. It should be a complete, declarative sentence. Create a list of main points to support the thesis. State them in complete sentences. Write a list of supporting ideas for each main point. State them in complete sentences.

Topic: Use of Electronic Textbooks in School Thesis statement: Schools should switch to electronic textbooks to save money and paper. Writer’s specific purpose: To suggest to schools that electronic textbooks are better options than physical ones because these can save money and paper It takes many pieces of paper to write just one textbook. An average textbook could take around 300 to 400 pages or more. Combined the number of pages with the number of students in a classroom would mean a lot of paper and money used.

Textbooks should be switched to electronic ones. Some students are starting to use online applications and electronic books and have seen their benefits. The switch will help reduce the harm the creation of textbooks brings to the environment.

Read the news article . Complete the sentence outline below. Making cold brew, or coffee made with cold water, can be messy and time-consuming. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
