Debate : It’s a battle of minds! Think, Speak, Win!

Procedure of the Debate: 1. The teacher divides the class into two teams. One team (the affirmative) supports the motion, and the other (the negative) opposes the motion.

Procedure of the Debate: 2 . The teacher acts as a chairperson, who controls the proceedings. 3. The speeches and speaking time are divided equally between the two teams.

Procedure of the Debate: 4 . Each speaker makes a speech to argue their case. The sides speak in turn, starting with the proposer of the motion (affirmative, negative, affirmative, negative). Each speaker has a specified amount of time to speak (2-3 minutes).

Procedure of the Debate: 5. Then the debate can be opened to the floor, with speakers standing up to offer points supporting or opposing the motion.

Procedure of the Debate: 6 . Each team may then speak in ‘rebuttal’, after a short period has been allowed for the teams to consult. This means that they have a chance to argue against points raised by the opposition.

Procedure of the Debate: Each team may have one rebuttal speech each, or more. The first rebuttal speech is made by the negative side and the final rebuttal speech is made by the affirmative.

Important Rules The team supporting the motion must not shift its point of view. The same goes for the opposition, who must oppose the motion completely (whatever their private opinions may be).

Important Rules If a speaker makes a statement, they must be able to provide evidence or reasons to support the statement.

Important Rules Facts presented in a debate must be accurate. Speakers may not bring up new points in a rebuttal speech.

Criteria for Rating Clarity and Relevance – 25% This means that the debaters should present their arguments in a clear, logical, and coherent way, using appropriate language and evidence. They should also address the topic and the motion of the debate, and avoid irrelevant or tangential points.

Criteria for Rating Organization – 25% This means that the debaters should have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion for each speech, and use signposting and transitions to guide the listeners. An organized debate will make the arguments easier to follow, compare, and evaluate.

Criteria for Rating Analysis and Reasoning – 25% This means that the debaters should not only state their claims, but also explain why they are true, relevant, and preferable. They should use logic, evidence, examples, and counter-arguments to support their positions, and address the potential objections and weaknesses of their own and their opponents' arguments.

Criteria for Rating Delivery and Style – 25% This means that the debaters should not only have good content, but also good presentation. They should use an appropriate tone, volume, pace, and gesture to convey their messages, and avoid filler words, hesitations, or distractions.
