Digestive system is digestion , It breaks down food mechanically and chemically Mechanically -   Purely physical process such as c hewing, as well as tongue movements that help break food into smaller bits Chemically – A process in which saliva and other enzyme break food into smaller Remember: The journey of the food starts from the mouth down to the anus takes about 18-20 hours.

There are 5 process of digestion Ingestion Digestion Absorption Assimilation Egestion

Ingestion - It is the journey of taking in food or any substance into the body through the mouth Digestion - is the second process involved in digestive system. and breakdown the food into smaller pieces - Both chemical and mechanical digestions begin immediately in the mouth.

The teeth cut, crush, and break it apart into tiny pieces while the salivary glands produces saliva that helps soften foods and the tongue mixes the food and saliva to formed into a moist ball called bolus so it can be easily swallowed. Saliva contains of salivary amylase - the enzyme that breaks down or convert starch into smaller carbohydrate. Bolus

Epiglottis is a flap-like structure at the back of the throat that closes over the trachea preventing food from entering it. It is located in the Pharynx. Then the pharynx has open to swallow. Bolus

bolus  Once food is swallowed, it should move down the esophagus in about three seconds.   E sophagus - a tube that attaches the mouth to the stomach. (20cm long) Peristalsis – Is the process that push and transport foods and liquids in small sections to the stomach .

Chyme Small intestine The walls of the stomach have special cells that produce gastric juices like hydrochloric acid and pepsin that begin the chemical breakdown of proteins. Chyme is a semifluid material formed from bolus that is acted upon by the gastric juices It takes four hours before the food or chyme pushes into the small intestine

Chyme Small intestine Duodenum is the first and shortest part of the small intestine that starts at the lower end of the stomach and extends for about 20 cm to 25 cm in length. Duodenum

Summary of Enzymes act in Digestion Process Amylase, and lactase breaks down carbohydrates into sugars. Lipase breaks down fats into fatty acids. Trypsin and Peptidase breaks down protein into amino acids. The production and release of enzymes and acids in the digestive system is called Secretion

Liver Directly affects digestion by producing bile Bile helps digest fat filters out toxins and waste including drugs and alcohol and poisons. 14

Gall Bladder Stores bile from the liver, releases it into the small intestine. Fatty diets can cause gallstones

Pancreas Produces digestive enzymes to digest fats, carbohydrates and proteins Regulates blood sugar by producing insulin
