The teacher will give the definition of Scientific notation and give examples.
Explain:
The teacher explains the rules of writing numbers to scientific notation.
Writing a Number in Scientific Notation
Move the decimal point to the right or left until after the first significant digit and copy the significant digits to the right of the first digit. If the number is a whole number and has no decimal point, place a decimal point after the first significant digit and copy the significant digits to its right.
For example, 4. 420,000 has 1 significant digit, which is 4. Place a decimal point after 4.42
Multiply the adjusted number in step 1 by a power of 10, the exponent of which is the number of digits that the decimal point moved, positive if moved to the left and negative if moved to the right.
For example, 4, 420, 000 is written as 4.42 x 1010 because the decimal point was moved past 10 places.
Elaborate:
The teacher gives examples that expose learners to write very large and very small numbers into scientific notation and vice versa.
Evaluate:
The teacher gives a short activity on writing numbers in scientific notation and vice versa.

WELCOME and GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!!
Objective At the end of the lesson you will be able to... change a number written in standard notation into scientific notation. change a number written in scientific notation into standard notation.
Find the Product Find the Qoutient )
WELCOME EVERYONE to our Math class !! Scientific NOTATION
What is a Scientific N otation ??
How to write a one hundred in a standard form ?? 100
How to write a one thousand in a standard form ?? 1, 000
How to write a one million in a standard form ?? 1,000,000
How to write a one billion in a standard form ?? 1,000,000,000
How to write a one trillion in a standard form ?? 1,000,000,000,000
D oes it hard to write many numbers or zeroes in a large number ??
Scientific Notation
Definition of Scientific Notation Scientific notation is... a simple way to write very large or very small numbers using powers of 10 .
Why Scientific Notation? Scientific notation is useful in math and science classes .
Why Scientific Notation? We use it because it is shorter than writing out a very long number, and its easier to read.
Examples Here are some examples of the same numbers written first in standard notation and then in scientific notation: 140 = 7,600,000 = 0.00000056 = 1.4 x 10 2 7.6 x 10 6 5 .6 x 10 -7
Writing a number in scientific notation A number in scientific notation is always written as: A number between 1 and 10, multiplied by 10 raised to a power. Example: 2 x 10 -12 5.2 x 10 3
Are these numbers written in scientific notation? Yes or No? 1. 12 x 10 2 2. 3.5 x 10 3 3. 5.5 x 10 -15 4. 1.2 x 20 11
Let's practice together :) Ma. Cristina C. Gotianum Maam CCG
Let's practice together :) Semirara Mining and Power Corporation’s (SMPC) net income jumped 52% in the first quarter to P4, 420 ,000, 000 from P2, 910, 000, 000 in the same period last year.. P4, 420 ,000, 000 .
Let's practice together :) Step 1 : Find the significant number between 1-10 That number is 4.42 Step 2: Count how many places the decimal has to move to get a number between 1-10 That number is 10 places Step 3: Write in scientific notation 4.42 x 10 9
Two more examples: Change 3,400,000 to scientific notation: Change 0.00022 to scientific notation : Change 0.000089 to scientific notation: 3.4 x 10 6 2.2 x 10 -4 8 .9 x 10 -5
Changing Scientific Notation to Standard Notation 5.1 x 10 6 = 7.2 x 10 -5 = 5, 100, 000 0.000072
Let's practice together !! Make it a Standard Form 7.2 x 10 3 = 1.2 x 10 -5 = 7, 200 0.000012
Time to practice by yourself Complete the practice problem by yourself and we will review it together as a class after everyone is finished. Change the number into: Scientific Notation Standard Form 1. 3,400,000 4. 3.1 x 10 5 2. 0.0021 5. 1.2 x 10 2 3. 0.000000048 6. 3.4 x 10 -3
Do you know now how to....? Change a very big number into scientific notation? Change a very small number into scientific notation? Change scientific notation into a regular number?
Questions... Why would a scientist prefer to write a very long number (like 0.00000000009254) in scientific notation? In which two classes would you be able to use scientific notation? (In college or high school)
