Determine the rules in mechanics; Identify the errors in a text; and Use proper mechanics in writing such as spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviation.
What is Mechanics?
Mechanics Mechanics and conventions are rules and systems for how things should be written down in order to ensure that what ends up on the page is what one means to express . It is areas that are covered by mechanics and conventions include punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and abbreviation.
Punctuation This system of signs or symbols given to a reader to show how a sentence is constructed and how it should be read . Sentences are the building blocks used to construct written accounts. They are complete statements. Punctuation shows how the sentence should be read and makes the meaning clear.
Punctuation- Comma (,) Use a comma to separate items in a series. A series is made up of three or more nouns, verbs, modifiers, or phrases . Example: Oral Communication, EAPP, and 21 st Century Literature are core subjects in the Senior High School.

Punctuation- Comma (,) Use commas to set off dates (except the month and day), geographical names, items in dates (except the month and day), addresses (except the street number and name), and titles in names . Examples : Kadayawan festival is celebrated in August. On March 31, 2011, Panabo became a city.
Punctuation- Semicolon (;) The use a semicolon when you link two independent clauses with no connecting words. Examples: I am excited to go home: I wanted to stay there for good.
Punctuation- Colon (;) Use a semicolon when joining two independent clauses together which one of the following conjunctions adverbs (Adverbs that join independent clauses): however moreover, therefore, consequently, otherwise, nevertheless, thus, etc. Examples: I am excited to go home; moreover, I wanted to stay there for good.
Punctuation- Colon (:) Separating chapter from verse in Bible reference. Separating volume from page in bibliography reference, writing a salutatory greeting in professional writing and giving the time. Examples: My favorite verse is Psalm 23:1 Majority of the reference that I cited were taken from the Academic Journal 11:23 (volume 11, page 23)
Punctuation- Colon (:) Use a colon to introduce a formal list . Examples: Three things I have accomplished today: answered modules, e-mailed documents, and researched enrichment activities.
Capitalization Capitalize the first word in a sentence . Examples: Davao region is located on the southeastern part of Mindanao.
Capitalization Always capitalize the first word in the sentence as well as proper noun and adjectives. Examples: The Davao Crocodile Park is a must- see destination in the Davao City.
Capitalization C apitalize the pronoun “I” and the interjection “O”. Examples: O God, I thank you.
Capitalization Capitalize professional titles when used before a personal name . Examples: General Santiago was arrested for alleged graft .
Capitalization Capitalize academic titles and their abbreviations when they follow a personal name. Examples: Noime Pales, M.D
Capitalization Capitalize the first word in a letter’s greeting or close . Example: Sincerely yours,
Capitalization T he days of the week, months of the year, and holidays. Example: The opening of classes is on October. I always prepare gifts for Christmas.
Spelling
Abbreviation Abbreviation is also known as shortening of words. Only abbreviate well-known terms. Example: TV- T elevision ASAP - As soon as possible . DOB- Date of birth. BRB- Be right back.
Abbreviation Abbreviations that use capital letters are called initialisms . It is required to put a period after each letter. Example: M.D- “Medical Doctor” FAQ – “frequently asked questions” TBA – “to be announced” CNN – “Cable News Network” ADHD – “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” FBI – “Federal Bureau of Investigation” OMG – “Oh my God”
Abbreviation In formal writing, it is recommended not to abbreviate the dates only if needed, especially when used in tables or charts . Example: Mon. Oct. 5
Abbreviation Latin abbreviations should not be capitalized . Example: e.g.- ( exempli gratia) means “for example” i.e.- (id est ) means “that is”, ”other words” and more . i.a .- (inter alia) among other things et al- (at alii / ae /a) and other op. cit ( opere citato) in the work cited
