Planning to Study in the UK? Here’s What to
Know about the September Intake

International students must be aware of three basic intakes in the UK.
The two most popular are the September/October (fall) and
January/February (winter) intakes. A few universities also offer a May
(summer) intake.
The most in-demand intake is September, and it is the primary or main
academic year intake. The second intake is in January, which is the
alternative intake for selected courses and programs. Let’s take a closer
look.

September University Intake in the UK for International
Students in 2025
The September/October intake is one of the largest intakes in the UK
colleges or universities. Universities receive the highest number of
international student applications during this period.
Students prefer this intake as it provides a greater range of courses,
programs and universities to choose from. Generally, the application
period opens in February and closes in May.
Fall Intake Advantages
• Most preferred and main intake – the fall intake is the one that
receives the most international students.
• Greater variety of courses – as with all post-secondary courses,
universities open applications to a higher number of programs during
this intake.
• Internship and job opportunities – finishing courses from the fall
intake coincides with internship periods and job opportunities, allowing
students to have a competitive advantage when vying for academic and
career options.
The 3 Stages of Applying to the September/October
Intake
1. Begin on Time: August is the perfect month to figure out the ideal
universities, courses, and requirements.

2. Get Ready for the Test: Before applying, consider English language
proficiency tests, such as TOEFL or IELTS, by January or Feb. The tests
help you add the scores to your application.
3. Choose Your University & Prepare Important documents: Prepare
2–3 strong SOPs that highlight your skills and potential. Complete these
steps in the application window, between February and May.
