The Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela , celebrated each year on 18 July, Mandela's birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010.

Africa yearns and deserves to redeem her glory , to re-assert her centuries-old contribution to economics, politics, culture and the arts; and once more to be a pioneer in the many fields of human endeavour . We need to exert ourselves that much more, and break out of the vicious cycle of dependence imposed on us by the financially powerful; those in command of immense market power and those who dare to fashion the world in their own image . Mandela’s Concerns and Desires The people of the continent are eager and willing to be among the very best in all areas of endeavour .

Mwl . Julius Nyerere’s Wisdom & Advice "... intellectuals have a special contribution to make to the development of our nation, and to Africa. And I am asking that their knowledge, and the greater understanding that they should possess, should be used for the benefit of the society of which we are all members." => Intellectuals are being tasked to transform Africa

Being able to harness the resources of nature the continent is endowed with for sustainable development, Being able to sustain Africa ’ s growth beyond the extractive and natural resources commodity bonanza What Transformation of Africa ’ s Economies Entails => In both cases SETI capacity is required

=> Extractive and natural resources commodity bonanza => In many SSA countries these endowments of nature are not properly harnessed for sustainable development
