Sexual Reproduction

Vocabulary cross-pollination dispersal f ertilization germination s elf-pollination

Sexual reproduction it involves the male and female parts of the flower. It has four stages: pollination fertilization fruit and seed dispersal germination

Pollination it is the transfer of pollen grains from anther to a stigma. Pollination is usually carried out by insects such as bees and butterflies, wind and water.

Self-pollination t ransfer of pollen grains within one flower. Pollen grains from the anther are transferred onto the stigma.

Cross-pollination the transfer of pollen from the flower of one plant to the flower of a plant having a different genetic constitution .

Fertilization After pollination, the pollen grain germinates on the stigma and produces pollen tube.

After fertilization , the flower petals wither and drop off. The ovary becomes the fruit while the ovule develops into a seed.

Seed and fruit dispersal Seeds and fruits are dispersed by wind and water. Some seeds and fruits are dispersed by man and animals.
