Introduction
Thomas Hobbes is frequently credited as being a forefather to modern liberalism.
With his beliefs on individualism, along with his agreeance and acceptance of
intellectual and moral autonomy it is easy to understand why many modern liberals
would agree with Hobbes s political philosophy. However, Thomas Hobbes does not
support the concept of a democratic government, rather he supported the notion of a
absolutist government up until his death. Special attention must be given to Hobbes s
denial that autonomy can be thought of, or conceived as, a form of self government.

was overweight but during my early teen years as I grew, I began to lean out. I

The Story of My Search
When we were first assigned this paper, I was stumped. My interests span
throughout a broad variety of topics, and because of this, I did not really know
where to start. I have long been intrigued by the world of Japanese animation, and
recently, I happened upon a hard copy of my favorite film from when I was a child:
Howl s Moving Castle. All of the nostalgic memories I have of watching it when I
was a child flooded my mind, reminding me of how much I admire the artwork in
the movie. I began to brainstorm ideas related to this. In the end, I boiled it down to a
biography of Hayao Miyazaki (the director) and the strong themes in his movies.
Combining the two lead me to decide on addressing how his personal life influenced
the persuasive themes and symbols he conveys through his beautiful art.
My first step to approaching this challenge was to go to the library and research
sources that would be useful in completing this paper. After a few hours I had a
written list of dependable articles and websites that pertained to his movies.
Unfortunately, no credible source discussed his life. By chance, I managed to
acquire a book discussing Miyazaki s art and also providing a history of his career;
however, this made my list too plentiful, so I chose the facts most relevant to my
specific topic.

The success of Parliament during the first phase of the English Civil War can be
attributed to Oliver Cromwell s New Model Army. This army consisted of radical
Puritans and Independents, who believed they were fighting for God. Cromwell

Summary: Unequal Childhoods Class, Race, and Family Life Annette Lareau, author
of Unequal Childhoods Class, Race, and Family Life, revealed her research findings
in this enlightening text featuring twelve socially, economically, and culturally
diverse families having a child nine to ten years of age respectively in their nuclear
familyunit. These families were garnered from the author s coinciding study
comprised of eighty eight children. Lareau, along with her research assistants, visited
each family approximately twenty times. Visits included time spent within the home,
as well as family events, school functions, doctor s visits, structured activities,
shopping trips, and church services. Wide ranging contexts allowed researchers a
unique opportunity to observe and record a multiplicity of interactions within each
family unit. Exploring the nuances of race and social position beginning in childhood
and culminating in adulthood Lareau explores different approaches exercised by
parents in raising children. Separating families into three categories, including:
middle class, working class, and poor, the author began her study. Attempting to
answer the question, What is the outcome of these different philosophies and
approaches to child rearing? Lareau discovers that the answer was found in the
transmission of differential advantages (Lareau 2011:5). Accordingly, these
advantages equip children with tools to navigate through life progressively or
prohibitively respective to the individual instruction obtained in childhood. In
unearthing these discoveries, the author employed the use of ethnography through
naturalistic observation utilizing field notes and taped recordings of interviews with
