SHOT PUT Dr. Hummaira Farah
Throwing sector of shot put It is put from a circle 2.135 meters (7 feet) in diameter into a 34.92° sector as measured from the center of the circle. The circle has a stop board 10 cm (4 inches) high at its front; if the competitor steps on or out of the circle, the throw is invalidated.
Throwing sector of shot put
Measuring Techniques of shotput Competitors take their throw from inside a marked circle 2.135 meters in diameter, with a stop board approximately 10 centimeters high at the front of the circle. The distance thrown is measured from the inside of the circumference of the circle to the nearest mark made in the ground by the falling shot, with distances rounded down to the nearest centimeter. Place the zero end of the tape at the mark made by the shot closest to the throwing circle, pull through to the center of the circle(should be a mark or hole, and read off the measurement where the tape crosses the inside edge of the circumference of the circle or toe board.
Balance If proper balance cannot be maintained, it will hamper the final result. A loss of balance can cause collapse/ failure in the acceleration and reduce the application force on the shot put. Proper attention should be given to the following points: Centre of mass of the thrower (legs, head, trunk, hip, arms ) Base of support of the thrower Desired direction of travel
Technique The athlete must rest the shot close to the neck, and keep it tight to the neck throughout the motion. The shot must be released above the height of the shoulder, using only one hand. The ball is to be put (i.e. pushed), not thrown with an overhead motion. At no time may the shot move behind the plane of the shoulders.
Basic R ules Upon calling the athlete's name, they have sixty seconds to commence the throwing motion . • The athlete may NOT wear gloves; rules permit the taping of individual fingers. • The athlete must rest the shot close to the neck, and keep it tight to the neck throughout the motion . • The shot must be released above the height of the shoulder, using only one hand. The ball is to be put (i.e. pushed), not thrown with an overhead motion. At no time may the shot move behind the plane of the shoulders.
Basic Rules 1. An Athlete Can Enter the Circle From Any Direction of rear half/ back side. After completing the throw, an athlete must exit from the rear half of the throwing circle. 2. The Shot Must Be Put From Close To The Neck Or Chin “At the time an athlete takes a stance in the circle to commence a put, the shot shall be in close proximity/nearer to the neck or chin and the hand shall not be dropped below this position during the action of putting. The shot shall not be taken behind the line of the shoulders.”
Basic Rules 3. The Throw Must Be Completed From Within The Circle 4. Athletes Can’t Touch The Top Of The Stop Board 5. The Shot Must Land Entirely Within The Sector
Basic Rules When an athlete’s name is announced, he or she will be having only 60 seconds to commence the throwing motion. For safety purpose, the players can tape their fingers but they certainly cannot wear gloves. The resting position of the shot is near the neck and it should remain over there throughout the motion. With the use of only one hand, the shot should be released above the height of shoulder.
Foul throws occur when an athlete: Does not pause within the circle before beginning the throwing motion • Does not begin the throwing movement within sixty seconds of having his or her name called. • Allows the shot to drop below his shoulder or outside the vertical plane of his shoulder during the put . • During the throwing motion, touches, with any part of the body (including shoes ) • T he top or ends of the stop board • A nywhere outside the circle.
Foul throws occur when an athlete: Throws a shot which either falls outside the throwing sector or touches a sector line on the I nitial impact. • Leaves the circle before the shot has landed. • Does not exit from the rear half of the circle.
Foul throws occur when an athlete: The first three rounds of throws is taken by each competitor in an order determined randomly at entry registration. The top 8 throwers, once established, will have three more attempts in order of increasing distance. The final rankings will result from all 6 attempts. The competitor's best throw from the allocated number of throws, typically three to six, is recorded, and the competitor who legally throws the shot the farthest is declared the winner. Ties are broken by determining which thrower has the longer second-best throw. If any disputes or problems arise, consult the Field Referee
HOW MANY ATTEMPTS WILL BE GIVEN Only three(3) throws are taken at the preliminary meet by each competitor. The final ranking will be determined from the best attempt of the three. Only three(3) throws are taken in the first round. Determine the top eight throws for the second round and announce placement to athletes. The second round of three(3) more throws goes in reverse order of distance. The final rankings will result from all six(6) throws
Foul throws occur when an athlete: An athlete can use the perimeter/edge of inside the circle but certainly cannot use the border or outside area of the toe board. Extension of the limbs outside the circle during the throw is allowed. The legal sector is 34.92 degree of the throwing area. The shot should be thrown within that range. An athlete should leave the circle from back.
Fouls in Shot Put A throw will be called a foul in the following circumstances − The athlete does not pause before the throwing action within the circle. The athlete is unable to commence the throw within 60 sec of calling his name. The athlete holds the shot below the shoulder level or outside its vertical level. The athlete is not able to make a continuous contact of the shot with the neck and it slips off.
Fouls in Shot Put If during the throwing the shot touches any of the following Top or ends of the toe board Upper side of the iron ring At any position outside the circle. The athlete goes out of the circle before the landing of the shot. The athlete does not move from the rear half of the circle.
All Officials Judge/1st Recorder: S tart time Thumb up – no foul, thumb down - foul. 100% positive to call a foul. H old your signal until you are sure Judge/Timer/2nd Recorder: Check the athletes Make sure you have a Red, Green, Yellow flag .
All Officials Raise a yellow flag and verbalize when 15 seconds remain; hold the flag overhead then drop it immediately when time expires, Coordinator : Call the athletes, “Up…On Deck…On Hold” a Do not let athletes enter the circle before the second “Up” call.
