1. Simple Past – Verbos Regulares O passado dos verbos regulares faz-se pelo acréscimo de – ed à forma básica dos verbos: to work (trabalhar) worked / to wash (lavar) washed To call (chamar) called Essa forma é única para todas as pessoas; não varia na 3° pessoa do singular: I/ you / he / she /it/ we / you / they worked , washed , called Quando os verbos são irregulares é preciso memorizar suas formas de passado , pois elas variam de um para outro . 2. Uso do Simple Past O Simple Past é usado para indicar uma ação realizada e totalmente terminada no passado, correspondendo, em português, tanto ao Pretérito Perfeito como ao Pretérito Imperfeito: Castro Alves lived in the nineteenth century . (Castro Alves viveu no século dezenove .) Regras para uso do sufixo – ed Quando o verbo regular terminar em e , acrescenta-se-lhe apenas –d : to decide (decidir)  decided Quando o verbo terminar em y precedido de consoante, troca-se o y por i e acrescenta-se – ed : to classify (classificar)  classified

3. Quando o verbo regular for monossilábico e suas últimas letras forem consoantes – vogal – consoante, dobra-se a consoante final e acrescenta-se – ed : to stop (parar)  stopped O mesmo acontece com verbos de mais de uma sílaba, desde que a última seja a sílaba tônica : to prefer (preferir)  preferred to permit (permitir)  permitted to occur (ocorrer)  occurred to refer (referir)  referred
